American Idol Season 14: Did the Right 2 Go Home?

Two weeks ago, the judges used the save on Qaasim Middleton, the question is did they use the save at the right time and on the right person? Based on who went home last Wednesday, I don't think they did. My picks to go home were Daniel Seavey and Maddie Walker. Daniel is a great kid and he does have talent but he is not growing at the rate that his fellow contestants are. Maddie is progressing and she has a great voice, but the personality doesn't match.

This week we ended up losing Maddie and Adanna Duru, who to me, was a front runner in this competition. What Maddie lacked in personality and passion, Adanna made up for, ten fold. Adanna always emoted and sometimes she lost control with her voice, but I think that is more teachable than where Daniel and Maddie were in all of this.

Daniel was actually the first one to discover that he made it through to next week. He sings You Make My Dreams Come True by Hall & Oates-- I did not love this song choice for him, and I felt like once again his vocals felt short and were weak for me. His voice cracked in a couple of places. He looks good on camera like Keith said, but honestly, I am going to be surprised if he continues to make it through. Harry said that he needs to throw the choreography away.
Score: 6 out of 10

Quentin Alexander sang In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins-- I loved this, I found the whole performance very intriguing; there was something quite haunting about it. Keith is right, Questin has so much artistry. Jenn said your cool factor was on 1000, the mood and the drama of it worked. Harry said you dig as deeply as you can into those lyrics, I would like you to switch it up to something uptempo. Keith said killer song choice for you, the weight and majesty of it suited you so well. You have so much artistry Quentin.
Score: 9 out of 10

Joey Cook sang Girls Just Want to Have Fun by Cyndi Lauper-- I felt like the performance was a little bit lazy for me. It was not as good as it usually is, and Joey seemed like she knew it was off. Harry said she seemed to be distracted and holding back. Keith found it to be inconsistent.
Score: 7 out of 10

Tyanna Jones said I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston-- I agree with Harry, I liked the arrangement. It seems to me that Tyanna lost a little bit of her confidence but she sounded great, and I think she would have sounded even better if she wasn't thinking about it so much. Keith said Tyanna takes on the Whitney song really well, he said he felt like she was worried a little bit. Jenn said you aren't gonna be perfect all the time and don't be so in your head. Harry told her to fight for it every time.
Score: 9 out of 10

Jax sang You Give Love a Bad Name by Bon Jovi-- Overall, I liked the performance, I felt like she kept true to the theme while also remaining true to herself. It seemed as if she got lost in the middle of the performance but she ended on a strong note. Jenn liked the 80's punk attitude and was reminded of Jax when they first met her. Harry thinks her originality brought her here and her intrigue has kept her here. He liked the beginning and end. Keith warned her not to be afraid to change the arrangement.
Score: 8 out of 10

Nick Fradiani sang Man in the Mirror by Michael Jackson-- I love Nick, he's one of my favorite voice in the competition, but he needs to have that breakout performance. Harry said he likes how much humility that Nick has. Keith told him to make sure he is smiling and just calm down. Jenn said she got caught up in the song in the end because he really started singing to them.
Score: 9 out of 10

Clark Beckham sang Every Breath You Take by The Police-- I love the fact that Boy George wanted him to take the song down and he didn't. He stuck to his guns and committed to what he felt was right for him, and he completely nailed it. The performance was touching, the bridge sounded amazing. The judges were all sitting there hanging on every word. Keith said you took me on a journey melodically and emotionally. Jenn said the performance felt really good and it was so beautiful.
Score: 9 out of 10

Qaasim Middleton sang Addicted to Love by Robert Palmer-- I thought this was Qaasim's best vocal to date, so he might stick around. Jenn liked that he was a bit more reserved this week. Harry said your greatest strength is your ability to perform. He said you have to forfeit the performing sometimes in order to give a better vocal. Keith said give us something more vulnerable because your voice has a beautiful quality.
Score: 7 out of 10

Rayvon Owen sang Everybody Want to Rule the World by Tears for Fears-- I liked parts of the performance, but there were some weak spots. The judges called him out and rightfully so. Harry said it was one of his stronger interpretations, but he could do without the default falsetto. I agree, for some reason, Rayvon feels like he has to add it in every week. Jenn tells him to take a risk and go outside his comfort zone because she believes it is the only way he will grow.
Score: 7 out of 10

Daniel, Joey, Qaasim, and Rayvon could be in some trouble on Wednesday.

The Voice Season 8: The Battles Are Complete

Team Adam: Barry Minniefield singing What You Won't Do for Love by Bobby Caldwell versus Tonya Boyd Cannon singing I Wish by Stevie Wonder-- Both performances were solid, I loved both of them. Barry has such a rich and powerful voice, and Tanya just goes out there with so much conviction every time. Blake felt like they should never be separated, they are already an act. Christina said you both represent similar things, I was feeling every second. Pharrell said Barry I look forward to your performances, you give so much soul, and Tanya, you can't hide the church in there. I can't make a choice.
Should win: Barry, love him
Who Won? Tanya

Team Blake: Brooke Adee singing Electric Feel by MGMT versus Kelsie May singing Tim McGraw by Taylor Swift-- I didn't feel like Kelsie's performance did a very good job of showcasing her range. Brooke's performance was definitely more intriguing for me, and I felt like her vocals were strong. Christina liked Brooke's voice, and she liked that Kelsie's performance was full of emotion. Blake said I want to leave, and Adam said please leave. Pharrell said that Brooke sounded like the b side of a Motown album. Adam said you're evenly matched, but I was very taken by what Brooke was doing.
Should win: Brooke
Who Won? Brooke

Team Christina: India Carney singing Big White Room by Jessie J versus Joe Tolo singing One of Us by Joan Osborne-- I am not familiar with the song India chose. I felt Joe's performance was quite genuine and from the heart. I felt like he did a good job on connecting with the song. As much as I like India, I think I would choose Joe. India's performance was powerful, but I found the song itself a little bit boring. Pharrell said Joe had a breakout moment, and he said India is glowing and he would choose her. Adam called India a beast.
Should win: Joe
Who Won? India

Team Pharrell: Lowell Oakley singing My Girl by The Temptations versus Jacob Rummell singing Life of the Party by Sean Mendes-- I think I actually like Jacob better than Lowell. Blake thought Lowell sounded great, and Jacob you have an incredible voice. Christina thought Jacob's performance was great and she would pick him, she thought Lowell seemed uncomfortable.
Should win: Jacob
Who Won? Lowell

Team Christina: Rob Taylor singing Love and Happiness by Al Green versus Treeva Gibson singing Chasing Pavements by Adele-- I loved Rob, he just has so much soul, it's ridiculous. I liked Treeva but she wasn't confident enough. It seemed like Christina felt similarly to how I felt.
Should win: Rob
Who Won? Rob

Team Adam: Joshua Davis singing The Arms of a Woman by Amos Lee versus Lexi Davila singing Anything Could Happen by Ellie Goulding-- I could not think of anything wrong with Josh's performance. It was heartfelt, and I loved how powerful the vocal was. It was controlled. Lexi absolutely lit up the stage, her voice completely sparkled. Blake is right, it's like something switched and all of a sudden she gained all this confidence. Blake said Josh looks like he is ready to go to the end of this thing. Christina said Josh pulls on your heart strings, and she said she has to commend Adam for coaching her so well. Pharrell said Joshua gave a masterful performance, and he said Lexi performed that song with such accuracy.
Should win: both of them!
Who won? Joshua and Christina please steal! YES!! Christina steals Lexi

The Voice Season 8: Who Returns Home in the Knockouts?

Team Blake: Cody Wickline singing Til My Last Day by Justin Moore versus Corey Kent White singing Live Like You Were Dying by Tim McGraw-- Christina said Corey came out with so much heart, and Cody you poured your heart into your performance as well. Pharrell said Cody I didn't know you had those kinds of runs, and Corey you had such a presence.  Adam said Corey you delivered your vocal in an incredibly passionate way. Blake said Cody has a sound that isn't on the radio. Corey you took what was happening in your real life and dumped it into your song.
Should win: Corey and Cody really
Who won? Corey

Team Adam: Blaze Johnson singing You Found Me by The Fray versus Deanna Johnson singing Listen to Your Heart by Roxette-- I liked Blaze's rich tone, it sounded like he went off pitch somewhere but you could tell that he really felt the meaning of the song. Deanna had pitch issues all the way through as Blake noted. Christina said Blaze had an urgency and an overall strong performance. Adam told Deanna she is running out of reasons not to believe in herself. I would choose Blaze cause he wanted it more.
Should win: Blaze
Who won? Deanna

Team Pharrell: Hannah Kirby singing Bring Me a Higher Love by Steve Winwood versus Caitlin Caporale singing War by Demi Lovato-- I didn't love Hannah's performance, to me, it seemed like she was bordering on shouting. In terms of being the technically better singer, I would go with Cailtin. Blake said, I don't know who I would go with. Christina said Caitlin's performance was very special.
Should win: Caitlin
Who won? Caitlin, but Blake stole back Hannah

Monday, March 23, 2015

The Voice: Season 8's Knockouts Begin

Team Christina: Ashley Morgan singing Heartbreaker by Pat Benatar versus Sonic singing A Woman's Worth by Alicia Keys-- Sonic had a smoother performance; I think I would choose her just based on the fact that I preferred the style and tone. Christina said Ashley has great technical ability. Christina said Sonic takes chances and runs the risk of falling short.
Should win: Sonic
Who won? Sonic

Team Blake: Sarah Potenza singing Wasted Love by Matt McAndrew versus Brian Johnson singing Nothing Ever Hurt Like You by James Morrison-- I love Brian's vocals and his tone is amazingly smooth and strong. I loved this song choice on him, it just sat in the perfect part of his voice. I loved Sarah's grit and breathy vocal, I didn't think anyone could have that combination. Adam said you were equally amazing, and I am leaving it at that because I don't wanna give Blake any help. Adam said Brian is someone who should definitely be in the live shows.
Should win: both of them, amazing
Who won? Sarah.......... can someone please steal Brian! Thank you Adam Levine! You are so smart my friend. :)

Team Adam: Clinton Washington singing Wanted by Hunter Hayes versus Nathan Hermida singing Leave Your Lover by Sam Smith-- Clinton has such a bad ass voice and his range is just off the charts. He emotes so much and so well, and I love his versatility. He should not go home after this. I liked Nathan but there were some pitch issues, and it wasn't as technically good as Clinton's performance. Blake said, Adam your team doesn't suck, they're good. Christina said Clinton I could see your growth, and Nathan I liked your courageousness. Pharrell said both of you have potential.
Should win: Clinton
Who won? Nathan

Team Pharrell: Sawyer Fredericks singing Collide by Howie Day versus Mia Z. singing Hold On I'm Coming by Sam and Dave versus Paul Pfau singing I Don't Need No Doctor by John Mayer-- I didn't love Mia's performance, yes, it was original, but I felt like the song was unrecognizable. I loved the authenticity of Paul's performance, I feel like I would hear that in a really good blues club. Sawyer's performance was little sleepy for me, I am not sure of this song choice for him. Adam said they should start a band together. Blake said he is blown away by Mia's performance. Christina said Sawyer is a genetic genius with his vocal ability.
Should win: Mia and Paul
Who won? Sawyer and Mia

Team Blake: Meghan Linsey singing Natural Woman by Aretha Franklin versus Travis Ewing singing I Don't Wanna Be by Gavin DeGraw-- Meghan blew it out of the box with her performance. Pharrell was on his feet for good reason, I loved it. I felt like Travis gave it his all, but I don't think he was better than Meghan. Pharrell said, Travis I just met you, that awesome; Meghan you sang that song in a way that proves your worthiness. Blake said Travis figures out a way to compete no matter what, and Blake said he is proud to see how far Meghan has come.
Should win: both but Meghan has the edge.
Who won? Meghan

Team Christina: Kimberly Nichole singing If You Love Somebody (Set Them Free) by Sting versus Koryn Hawthorne singing Try by Pink-- I loved Kimberly's performance, it was a soulful vocal with a lot of confidence and she reminded me of Fantasia Barrino. Koryn was great too, her voice was impactful and the performance had so much passion. Adam said Koryn that was the best performance you've given so far. Blake said, Kimberly, you had so much fun, and Koryn, your performance was intense.
Should win: both!
Who won? Kimberly......... but Pharrell stole Koryn

The Top 11 Sing Songs from The Movies on American Idol Season 14

Adanna Duru sang I Love You I Do by Jennifer Hudson from "Dream Girls"-- Jenn said she wanted more real emotion coming from the "you're the perfect man for me". Harry thought everything was good and strong. He said to focus more on the audience, and he feels the connection will be better overall. I liked this performance a lot, Adanna, always puts so much passion into her performance. I hope she sticks around.
Score: 9 out of 10

Daniel Seavey sang Lost Stars by Adam Levine from "Begin Again"-- Oh man, I love Daniel, but that was pitchy all over the place. Jenn thought it was okay, she felt his emotion, but didn't think it was his best performance. Harry said it wasn't strong tonight. Keith said it was a good song choice for him, but he needs to dig in a little more, and not be distracted by the audience.
Score: 6 out of 10

Rayvon Owen sang Stayin Alive by the Bee Gees from "Saturday Night Fever"-- I liked the arrangement of the song, but I felt like falsetto sounded a little weird at times, kinda manic. Harry admired the arrangement, but said how do you remain interesting? He said give yourself some lyrics you can chew on, he said you sing the falsetto notes, but there isn't a lot of substance.
Score: 7 out of 10

Nick Fradiani sang Danger Zone by Kenny Loggins from "Top Gun"-- Nick continues to grow in my opinion, that was a Chris Daughtry-esque performance. Keith said, I feel like you're getting more comfortable up there, and keep going in that direction. Jenn thought it was an improvement, and she thought the song and the tone was perfect for him, she told him to own it more. She said own your hotness. Harry said give yourself a song to be sexy on, I felt like that was the wrong song for you.
Score: 8 out of 10

Joey Cook sang Mad World by Tears for Fears from "Donnie Darko"-- Joey sounded amazing in that performance, it was so focused, serious, and beautiful. Jenn said Joey gave her Sia vibes. Harry said, you always stay in your lane, but you find other ways to show different parts of yourself, amazing job. Keith said, you're such an artist, you always deliver something unusual. I heard something in that song, I have never heard before.
Score: 10 out of 10

Tyanna Jones sang Circle of Life by Elton John from The Lion King-- I didn't like this performance, I am a big Tyanna fan, but this did not sound good, it was also pitchy all over the place. It almost sounded like she couldn't hear over the track. Harry felt she overshot the mark, he said there was some intonation issues, and it sounded like you yelled all the way through. Keith said she has beautiful tone and vibratto, but he said she had serious pitch issues.
Score: 7 out of 10

Quentin Alexander sang You're the One that I Want by Olivia Newton John and John Travolta from Grease-- I thought the ending was a little far fetched, but overall, I liked the way he changed the song. Jenn said it was very haunting and beautiful, it didn't translate as much as you felt it. Harry said you have to think about the pitch, that was horribly out of tune.
Score: 8 out of 10

Maddie Walker sang Let's Hear it for the Boy by Denience Williams from Footloose-- Once again, pitch was all over the place, and I thought it sounded very nasal. Harry said it wasn't very good, and I don't know who you are. Keith said he thought she should have chosen a ballad.
Score: 6 out of 10

Clark Beckham sang Sunday Morning by Maroon 5 from Cheaper by the Dozen 2-- Clark has a beautiful voice, and such artistry. His performance was so genuine, and I really felt that. I liked that he played the guitar because it connected him more to the song. Harry said you put your arrangement on that song and knocked it out of the park. Keith said you're such a good singer. Jenn said it was beautiful and so you and you did something with it that I really loved.
Score: 10 out of 10

Jax sang Grow Old with You by Adam Sandler from The Wedding Singer-- That was a cute performance, it's the first time in a while I have felt any heart whatsoever from her. Keith said I loved you doing that song, I thought it was beautiful. Jenn said I love that this played into the quirkiness of your voice. Harry said you're a high risk high reward kind of performer.
Score: 9 out of 10

Qaasim Middleton sang Come Together for Judges' Save, and I am not sure if I agree with the judges or not, but they saved him nonetheless. I will say, he sounded better than he ever has, but I don't know if this will continue.
Score: 9 out of 10

Who is in trouble for double elimination week? Daniel, Maddie, Rayvon, and Tyanna

The Battles Come to a Close: The Voice Season 8

Team Christina: Jeremy Gaynor versus Rob Taylor sang Animals by Maroon 5-- I genuinely liked both guys. Jeremy has such a rich velvety voice, and Rob has this amazing range while remaining soulful. Adam said he would probably go with Jeremy. I can't choose, they're both so different, I probably wouldn't have paired them up.
Christina chose Rob

Team Pharrell: Noelle Bybee versus Sawyer Fredericks sang Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival-- Oh, they're both so sweet, I wish they weren't against each other either. Noelle has a beautiful tone, and Sawyer is such an artist, so interesting. Christina said Noelle's voice was angelic and Sawyer has a special gift. Pharrell said Noelle has grown so much and Sawyer truly supported his partner in this performance.
Pharrell chose Sawyer

Jacob has a great range. Pharrell said Jacob your voice is different, and Corey you were strong and consistent. Blake said you both did everything I asked of you. He said this song was really in neither one of their wheelhouses.
Blake chose Corey and I know Pharrell is going to steal Jacob...... YES!

The Voice Season 8: Night Three of The Battles

Team Pharrell: Briar Jonnee versus Caitlin Caporale sang Fallin' by Alicia Keys-- Both girls were pretty evenly matched, but I think in terms of vocal strength and just personal preference, I would go with Caitlin. Blake said I would buy a ticket to this show every day. Christina said, Briar you owned it; Caitlin, I wanted you on my team, but my team was full. Pharrell wasn't sure who to choose and Chistina said, go with your heart.
Pharrell chose Ciatlin

Team Adam: Barry Minniefield versus Jack Gregori sang Feelin' Alright by Joe Cocker-- Barry and Jack brought the power. They both remind me of those old school soul singers. I don't know who I would choose. Blake said both guys did a good job, but he would go with Barry. Christina said it was like watching a conversation with old friends. Barry was soulful and Jack was solid. Pharrell said both of your personalities are so big, Jack I love your tone, and Barry I love your soul. Adam had to go with Barry cause he likes his cool vibe.
Adam chose Barry

Team Chistina: Katelyn Read versus Treeva Gibson sang Addicted to Love by Florence and the Machine-- Adam said style and influence overwhelmed the performance, but he would go with Treeva. Blake said Treeva, you're so good it's crazy; Katelyn is a more developed vocalist and I would go with you. I actually liked both girls, I see what Adam is saying, but they both have just so much raw talent. Christina picked the person she felt had the most potential, and she went with.......
Christina chose Treeva

Team Pharrell: Kimberly Nichole versus Lowell Oakley sang You Ain't Nothing 'bout a Hound Dog by Elvis Presley-- I like both of them! Kimberly is more soulful with some jazz and blues influences, and Lowell was more rock with the blues influences. I loved it, and I do not know who I would choose. Adam said classic voice moment, I don't know who the hell to pick. I lost Lowell, but Kimberly you might have taken this. Blake said Kimberly, I am obsessed with you, you might need a restraining order, but Lowell you occupy a space no one else does. I plead the fifth. Christina said it was my favorite battle so far. Pharrell said, what did I do? Oh no! Pharrell can't choose! Whoever does not get chosen is going to be stolen.
Pharrell chose Lowell ....... Christina stole Kimberly

Team Blake: Brenna Yaeger versus Kelsie May sang Fancy by Reba-- Brenna won this for me. Pharrell said Kelsie you have a strong tone. Adam thought they were very evenly matched. Adam said he would Keslie, but he likes Brenna too.
Blake chose Kelsie

Team Christina: India Carney versus Clinton Washington sang Stay by Rihanna and Mikky Ekko-- Wow, they are both really good. Their runs are so in sync and incredible, I felt every single lyric and note. All four coaches are on their feet, and I have no idea who I would choose. Pharrell said it was technically the best battle this season. Adam said you two were both equals up there. Blake said I got so wrapped up in that, it was so beautiful. Christina said you both have amazing dynamic voices, everything was executed so perfectly. You both showed you have a reason to be here. Whoever does not get chosen needs to be stolen!
Christina chose India
Adam and Pharrell pushed to steal Clinton
Adam said you are extremely confident and I heard that in your voice today. Pharrell said I honestly think you have what it takes to win the show.
Clinton chose Adam

Standouts....... Kimberly and Lowell and India and Clinton..... wow

American Idol Season 14: The Top 12 and The Top 11

Sarina Joi Crowe sang Love Runs Out by OneRepublic-- It was a little messy. Keith and Jenn mentioned that there were some pitch issues.
Score: 7 out of 10

Rayvon Owen sang Wide Awake by Katy Perry--OMG! Performance of the night. Rayvon sounded amazing, loved his rendition of this. I really felt him communicating through this song, beautiful notes, he coasted through this. Harry said he sounded terrific
Score: 10 out of 10

Daniel Seavey sang Straight Up by Paula Abdul-- The beginning was really good and then in the middle it seemed like he lost his way. He forgot words, his timing was off. Harry said Daniel's inexperience is really showing. Keith said find an emotional song and kill it.
Score: 6 out of 10

Maddie Walker sang Suitcase by Gwen Sebastian-- Maddie has a great voice but she has to remeber to show some emotion. I do think she has a great voice though. Harry called it a solid performance.
Score: 8 out of 10

Tyanna Jones sang Wings by Little Mix-- I don't love this song, but Tyanna does a great job turning everything into an interesting lyric. Her vocals are a little unbridled, she needs to show more control at times but this will come with experience and maturity. Harry thinks it is crazy how comfortable she is on a stage.
Score: 9 out of 10

Nick Fradiani sang In Your Eyes by Peter Gabriel-- Nick has something that always draws me in. I would like to see him have more confidence cause he has the talent. Harry said you bring a lot of experience to this. Keith told him to believe in himself as much as America does.
Score: 9 out of 10

Jax sang I Want to Hold Your Hand by The Beatles-- I like Jax, but I feel like if she doesn't become more consistent and people don't start figuring out who she is, then she is going to be gone from the competition. Keith would have liked the whole thing at the piano. Harry didn't think she needed the band.
Score: 8 out of 10

Qaasim Middleton sang Sir Duke by Stevie Wonder-- Qaasim is definitely a performer, but I agree with Harry. Eventually I would like to see something different from him, something a little softer. I think sometimes his vocals drop off when he starts dancing. Jenn said his energy is contagious. Keith thought he killed it.
Score: 8 out of 10

Clark Beckham sang It's a Mans Mans World by James Brown-- I love Clark's voice, and this song fits him well. I would like him to sing something contemporary so we can see what type of album he would make today. Jenn said that was the vocal of the night. Amazing.
Score: 10 out of 10

Joey Cook sang King of Spain by The Tallest Man on Earth-- Jenn said one of your best performances and you filled up that stage just fine. I loved that performance, it was so understated but good, I will remember it.
Score: 9 out of 10

Instant Wildcards:

Quentin Alexander sang Royals by Lorde-- I loved Quentin's artistry and creativity. Jenn said he deserves to be there. Harry said you are so deeply in touch with your own artistry and the performance.
Score: 9 out of 10

Adanna Duru sang You and I by Lady Gaga-- Adanna always leaves everything out there, but it was all over the place and her vocals are a little messy. Harry said you have to channel all that energy cause it was really out of tune.
Score: 7 out of 10

-------------------------------------------------------

Top 11 -- Party Songs

Rayvon Owen sang Burn by Ellie Goulding-- Keith liked the song choice and called it his best performance. Jenn thought it was better than she wanted it to be. I actually didn't like it that much, I didn't like the song choice. Rayvon is one of my favorites, and his falsetto seemed a little bit off. Harry said, don't have the same arc on every song, make it more interesting.
Score: 7 out of 10

Maddie Walker sang She's Country by Jason Aldean-- I actually loved Maddie's vocal on this, it was her best vocal thus far. Her personality showed more than ever before, but she needs to step it up even more in terms of personality. Jenn loved her sassy and sweet personality and her strong vocals, it feels really good for you right now. Harry said I don't want you to imitate, I want to see who you are. Keith said you took some chances.
Score: 9 out of 10

Joey Cook sang Fancy by Iggy Azalea and Charli XCX-- I was not initially a Joey Cook fan, I felt like it was going to get old, but I loved this performance. I actually loved this version of the song more than the original. I am growing into a huge fan. Everyone is on their feet for her. Harry said A+ on the arrangement, sang brilliantly, it was phenomenal. Keith said your presence is so artist, and you made it your own.
Score: 10 out of 10

Clark Beckham sang Takin' it to the Street by The Doobie Brothers-- I love Clark but I don't love the song. My opinion is that it was a little bit safe, a lot of his performances have begun to sound very similar. No question about the vocals, they're crazy good. Keith said be careful, you have a great voice, but make sure you're inspiring. Jenn said it was really good on the piano. Harry said, not my favorite, I love that you don't perform, you're introspective.
Score: 9 out of 10

Jax sang Blank Space by Taylor Swift-- I'm agreeing with Jenn on this, it was not the right song choice for her. Harry thought it was a copy of the original. Keith said she seemed to struggle with the melody.
Score: 7 out of 10

Qaasim Middleton sang Jet by Paul McCartney & Wings-- I actually thought it was the best I have heard him sing. Harry said I don't think your performance matched what the song was trying to say. Keith said I don't care what you're singing about, I think your guitar playing made your singing better. Jenn said you make every song a party.
Score: 8 out of 10

Adanna Duru sang Runaway Baby by Bruno Mars-- This was a perfect song choice, a tight vocal, and a great performance. It could not have been easy to sing those vocals that quick but Adanna made it look easy. Jenn said you were in control as the performer, the vocal, the whole thing was better. Harry said it was so much better, the song choice was better.
Score: 10 out of 10

Tyanna Jones sang Tightrope by Janelle Monae-- I like this song for Tyanna, but I don't dig her attire. It's like the same outfit every week. I didn't like the breakdown in the middle of the performance but I liked the vocals. Jenn said you're so in control of everything, and it's so complete. Harry said if I were a judge in the Olympics I would have given you a 10; I wouldn't Harry, I didn't love it that much.
Score: 9 out of 10

Daniel Seavey sang Happy by Pharrell Williams-- I love Daniel but I am beginning to feel like he is in over his head with this competition. This performance of Happy was mediocre at best. Harry believes he is immensely talented. I do to, but this was not good.
Score: 7 out of 10

Quentin Alexander sang Rolling in the Deep by Adele-- I don't necessarily think this was the right song choice for him. Quentin is a great artist, and I like him very much. Harry said it was a shallow interpretation, and he didn't take it to where he usually takes it to every week.
Score: 7 out of 10

Nick Fradiani sang Wake Me Up by Avicii-- Nick's interpretation of this song was enjoyable. It really showcased the strength in his vocals, he took it to more of a rock place, which was nice. Jenn thought it was a great song choice for him. Harry said, don't be so shy. Keith said it must be an odd feeling to not have a band behind you. Thinking about it, this is actually one of my favorite performances of the night.
Score: 9 out of 10

Sarina Joi Crowe goes home! Very sad; I honestly felt like she had one of the best voices in the competition.

Who is in trouble next week? Daniel, Jax, Quentin, and Rayvon

Tuesday, March 10, 2015

All Battles: The Voice Season 8

Team Pharrell: Anthony Riley versus Travis Ewing sang Get Ready by The Temptations-- Adam thought Travis did an amazing job but he would go with Anthony. Blake said Travis made it a battle, and would choose him. Christina said based on her personal preference she would choose Anthony. I didn't care much about this battle, neither one of them really stood out to me. Anthony seemed more comfortable and in the zone so I could choose him.
Pharrell chose Anthony
Surprisingly, Blake came in with the steal for Travis

Team Christina: Ameera Delandro versus Sonic sang Masterpiece by Jessie J-- The girls took Nick Jonas's notes because the harmonies sounded tight. I think both of them sound great. Sonic sounded a little more soulful so I think I'd choose her. Wow, I think both of them deserve to move on, this was an exciting battle. Pharrell said Ameera went for it. Adam said it was like a "matrix" battle, and he felt the battle was pretty equal. Blake thought Ameera has a cool voice, and liked Sonic's pocket.
Christina chose Sonic

Team Christina: Gabriel Wolfchild versus Joe Tolo and Christina chose Joe

Team Adam: Deanna Johnson versus Nicholette Mare and Adam chose Deanna

Team Adam: Josh Batstone versus Nathan Hermida and Adam chose Nathan

Team Blake: Hannah Kirby versus Sarah Potenza sang Gimme Shelter by The Rolling Stones-- Sarah has the grittier voice, but Hannah stepped up to the plate, although at times I felt she was shouting. I think I would choose Sarah. Pharrell said Hannah is afraid of no one. Adam thought it was so even so he gave it to Hannah. Blake said Sarah you toned it down and Hannah you showed us your range.
Blake chose Sarah
Pharrell and Adam chimed in to steal Hannah and she chose Pharrell

Team Adam: Blaze Johnson versus Michael Leier sang Rude by Magic-- I liked both of them but I give the edge to Blaze. He just sounded stronger and bigger. Pharrell said it became intense at the end, I thought Blaze had the stronger performance. Adam said he heard and felt Blaze, and he said Michael controlled the rock and roll.
Adam chose Blaze

Team Blake: Cody Wickline versus Matt Snook sang How Country Feels by Randy Houser-- Both guys really got into the song. I loved how they got the audience and Christina into it. Christina said I like how country feels. Adam said they were literally hitting on Christina. Christina said both guys had great energy and she thought Cody was a cutie. Adam enjoyed both of them, but he said Matt gave the better vocal. Blake said he has to go with his gut, and ......
Blake chose Cody

Team Pharrell: Meghan Linsey versus Paul Pfau sang Don't Let Me Down by The Beatles-- Both were strong here, and it seemed like they were doing a real duet. Christina said Paul is a real individual, and she said Meghan really shines. Blake said, Pharrell, if I were you, I wouldn't pick Meghan (wink, wink). Pharrell said you both proved that you should stay on the show. I think everyone is going to try and steal Meghan.
Pharrell chose Paul
It's a three way fight to the end. Adam said Christina remember in the blind auditions when we turned around for Meghan and Blake didn't. Blake said, epic fail from Adam when he had three out of four finalists and still lost.
Meghan chose Blake

The Voice Season 8: The Blinds Come to a Close and Battles Begin

Nathan Hermida sang Sure Thing by Miguel-- Surprisingly smooth voice, love this song, he's good, and Adam turned immediately followed by Christina.I cannot believe his is 17. Adam said smoothest run I have heard, that was amazing. Christina said it was sexy and his rhythm was seductive. Adam said you sing well and you play the guitar, that was flawless, and I think you're gonna be in the finals.
Nathan chose Adam

Paul Pfau sang Fly Me to the Moon by Frank Sinatra-- Christina said you're Pharrell's dream, and Adam couldn't turn around cause his team is full. Blake and Pharrell turned around. Paul sounded good, he has a lot of experience, and said that he met Adam ten years ago, and had a demo cd to give his and he chickened out.
Paul chose Pharrell

Gaia Golden sang Red by Taylor Swift-- No one turned. I didn't love her rendition of the song.

Vance Smith sang Reach Out I'll Be Out There by The Four Tops-- Vance is someone who has definite potential, but needs some work. He was pitchy at points. Pharrell said the same things I did. Christina said I felt you were having a good time, and I would love to work with you.
Vance chose Christina

Caitlin Caporale sang Impossible by Christina Aguilera and Alicia Keys-- Christina was feeling so bad that she couldn't turn around on this, but Caitlin was amazing. Her voice and vocals were on point. Blake said he is looking at someone who can win the voice this year. Pharrell said some people annoy me with what they do, but you graciously directed the notes. Blake said he can coach her even though he is a country singer.
Caitlin chose Pharrell

Hannah Kirby sang The Letter by The Box Tops-- Pharrell said you are like a siren the way you hit that high note at the end. I think Hannah was just okay for me. She seemed a little bit shouty throughout the performance. She could potentially get better. Blake turned around and made her the last member of Team Blake
Blake chose Hannah

..................................................................

Team Pharrell: Ashley Morgan versus Mia Z. sang Put the Gun Down by ZZ Ward-- Adam said it's like choosing between pancakes and waffles. I thought Ashley had the stronger vocal like Christina said, technically she is stronger. Blake said he couldn't choose, and was deadlocked. All the coaches are in and trying to steal Ashley. Adam said I want you on my team cause you have to do a lot more work to get to the end of this thing, and I think we can do it. Christina said she is the only coach who said Ashley is the winner. I am shocked frankly that Pharrell chose Mia.
Pharrell chose Mia and Christina stole Ashley
I would have chose Ashley

Team Adam: James McNeice versus Tanya Boyd Cannon sang P.Y.T. by Michael Jackson-- I knew Tanya had it, but I am most impressed with James, he had some soul in this. I think he really hung in there with Tanya cause she has such a big voice. Blake said, Tanya your voice is so big, it's unbelievable, but James you stepped up to the plate. Christina said you brought the energy and the fun. She said she'd pick Tonya but James put in a valiant effort. Adam said, I always say make it hard for me, and you guys did.
Adam chose Tonya

Team Blake: Brian Johnson versus Joshua Davis- sang Knockin' on Heaven's Door by Bob Dylan-- These guys are both putting a lot of heart and emotion into this performance. Joshua has that more raspy rugged voice whereas Brian has a smoother voice. They compliment each other so well, both clearly deserve to move on, and they are harmonizing beautifully. Adam is on his feet, as is Blake. Christina thought Joshua's tone and Brian's tone are both beautiful. Pharrell said he couldn't pick either. Adam said they're not choosing because one of you is going to be stolen. Blake said for me, moving forward, the winner is Brian. Adam chose Joshua and said, hurry up and get out of here before someone else tries to take you.
Blake chose Brian and Adam stole Joshua

The Top 8 Men and Women Are Revealed on Idol Season 14

GUYS..........

Daniel Seavey sang How Sweet it is to be Loved by You by Marvin Gaye-- I like Daniel and he definitely sold his personality more, but the song was a little low for him. Keith thought it was a good song choice. Jenn liked how he had fun, but felt the song was too low. Harry felt that he needed to swing more with the band.
Score: 7

Mark Andrew sang Papa was a Rolling Stone by The Temptations-- I felt like the melody of the song got lost, so much so, it was initially unrecognizable to me. Mark has a good voice, and he is very Phillip Phillips but he needed to look more like a rock star and less like someone standing up to do karaoke. Jenn felt he didn't connect with the song. Harry thought it was too "jam band" and that if he keeps doing that, it will hurt him.
Score: 7

Rayvon Owen sang My Girl by The Temptations-- I loved how Rayvon changed parts of the song, but kept the melody which is what makes the song special and well liked. His runs were incredible, strong full voice, and strong falsetto. Harry told Rayvon he will eventually need to take some risks. He loved everything about the performance and thought his presence was strong, but would like to see him develop an edge.
Score: 10

Adam Ezegelian sang I Want You Back by The Jackson 5-- This was definitely an improvement over next week. I like Adam as a person, I think he has a charming personality. I don't think his voice is as great as everyone thinks, I think it's overlooked because he is so well liked. Harry says he nailed every note. Jenn loved the arrangement and Keith thought it was the perfect song for him.
Score: 8

Clark Beckham sang Tracks of my Tears by Smokey Robinson-- Clark is one of the strongest voices in this competition, one of the best performances of the night, I loved how he felt the performance. Jenn thinks he is amazing but needs to take it further. Harry thought the performance lacked a beginning, middle, and an end. Keith wanted him to ditch the band and guitar.
Score: 9

Nick Fradiani Jr. sang Signed, Sealed, Delivered by Stevie Wonder-- I liked how Nick made the song more pop rock than R&B, it was great, and Harry is right, it was a strong vocal. Harry thought it was strong overall, and encouraged Nick to sing more. Keith said Nick didn't seem totally comfortable playing the guitar.
Score: 9

Qaasim Middleton sang I Wish by Stevie Wonder-- I like Qaasim, and I think he has an explosive personality, but I do think he needs to pay attention to his vocals, because sometimes when you get that excited, vocals fall by the wayside. He definitely has stage presence. Keith said you're so funky, and you own the stage. Jenn told him to watch his vocal.
Score: 9

Quentin Alexander sang Master Blaster by Stevie Wonder-- Quentin definitely has the swagger to pull off this song. You need attitude to rock Master Blaster. Harry liked the way he layed into the groove. He did feel some reservation which he attributed to Quentin being chosen last,
Score: 9

In Trouble Next Week... Daniel Seavey, Mark Andrew, and Adam Ezegelian

.......................................................................................................................................

LADIES...................

Tyanna Jones sang Rockin' Robin by Michael Jackson-- Wow, I didn't think that was gonna be any good, but that was amazing. She sounded good, performed good.Keith said it was the perfect song for you. Jenn said that she really got throwback vibes from Tyanna's performance. Harry said, what can't you sing.
Score: 10

Loren Lott sang I Wanna Be Where You Are by The Jackson 5-- I loved the style of this song for her, but it seemed shouty when she did the "I Wanna Be Where You Are". Without question Loren has charisma and personality. I think the judges were overly zealous about her performance, but we'll see as time goes on.
Score: 8

Maddie Walker sang I'll Be There by The Jackson 5-- Keith said good choice of song for you, and you did a good job of changing it up. I agree with Harry's comment on changing up the dynamic but I am happy that she got through.
Score; 9

Joey Cook sang Shop Around by The Miracles -- I liked how different this was, she made the song work for her. Keith said I look forward to always listening and hearing what you do; I agree. I did not love Joey much last week, but I loved this performance on her. Harry felt she was really unique, she is so stylized that he feels some people may begin to tire of it.
Score: 9

Sarina Joi Crowe sang You Really Got a Hold on Me by The Miracles-- This was probably my favorite of the night so far; Sarina is one of my fave voices in the competition, she really reaches out and touches you when she sings. Keith said Sarina's tone is so beautiful and he said it was really good. Harry told her to be careful of going flat.
Score: 10

Adanna Duru sang Hello by Lionel Ritchie-- What a beautiful and heartfelt performance. I think she felt it lyrically. Keith said she owned the song. Harry told her to be careful of intonation. Jenn didn't love it but loves her.
Score: 9

Jax sang Ain't No Mountain High Enough by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell-- I love Jax and she is a favorite in this competition as Jenn pointed out, but the arrangement was a little far off. I thought her vocal was strong though, lots of grit in this. Jenn said that song didn't work for me in that way, you want it to be you, but you changed it so much that you took it away from what the song is. Harry agreed and said you have to kill it right now.
Score: 8

Alexis Gomez sang I Can't Help Myself by The Four Tops-- Jenn found it to be really out of pitch. Harry said he is happy that he made it, generally speaking, you have to find a way to control yourself emotionally, but you're really good. Keith said that wasn't a good song choice for you. I agree with all the judges, I love this girl, but she needs to pull everything together and present a complete package.
Score: 8

In Trouble Next Week...... Alexis Gomez, Jax, Loren Lott

Pharrell said it will be great to watch you soar. Adam literally went up on stage and hugged Brenna. I loved the sincerity in her voice, clearly she is moved by this song and life imitates art. It was so beautiful to hear her sing about her life.
Brenna chose Blake

Jeremy Gaynor sang Superstar by Stevie Wonder-- Christina turned almost immediately. I think Jeremy has a great voice, it would have been great to hear him pick up the tempo a little bit more. Blake said you are a stud, you're a great singer dude, and America's gonna love you. Adam said there is such charm in what you're doing, it just adds to your natural gift, and I am competitive. Christina said your talent is undeniable, and I do love R&B music. Pharrell said Congratulations on four chairs, I'd love to have you, your voice is amazing.

 Adam picked Jack

Briar Jonnee sang Take a Bow by Rihanna-- Briar has a smooth voice, and hit some surprisingly high notes, her voice is so full. Blake and Pharrell turned together. Blake said I love your vibratto and your voice is so full, I am sure you meant every word you sang up there. Blake said you're a country girl dammit, I need you on my team, let's win this thing. Pharrell said, I heard someone who could sing, but had some nerves. Let's work on those things, trust what got you here. Blake said, I can't stand you Pharrell, you and your fake limp.
Briar chose Pharrell

Jess Gallo sang Stolen Dance by Milky Chance-- I didn't think she was in the pocket with that at all. Her tone was flat and her voice sounded odd. No one turned. Adam said that she should have sang something a little less fun and more emotional, something darker, I totally agree.

Brian Johnson sang Reason to Believe by Rod Stewart-- I love Brian's voice, what a gift he has. His voice is so strong and just full of so much heart. Adam turned right away followed by Blake. Adam said you were just so engaged in such an emotional way. Blake said you have so much heart but you make it seem so easy. There is so much emotion and raw power, and I am a fan already. Blake said I protect people like you because you're unique, there is no one like you.
Brian chose Blake

Corey Kent White sang Chicken Fried by Zac Brown Band-- Corey is true country, wow! He had a great country voice. The coaches were debating who should push the button and finally under the wire Pharrell and Blake pushed their buttons. Blake said you have pride in your heart. Pharrell said, he knows country music but I know all kinds of music. Blake said I will make sure you are treated with respect based on the amount of talent that you have.
Corey chose Blake

Keslie May chose Blake

I loved Kimberly, it wasn't over the top, but she pushed her voice to the limit and was awesome. I loved her performance quality. Blake said you have a good idea of who you are as an artist, and I wanna make sure the spotlight is shining on you.
Kimberly chose Pharrell

Michael Leier sang Last Kiss by Pearl Jam-- Adam and Blake both got in on this one. I like Michael, he has a really strong voice, I loved it. Blake said, I'm confused about what Adam just said.
Michael chose Adam

Travis Ewing sang Say My Name by Destiny's Child-- Three out of four, but it should have been a four chair turn, Adam where were you? Christina turned right away. I love the way he flipped this song, and I just liked his tone and the way he phrased things. His dynamics and diction were spot on. Christina said she liked his arrangement of the song, and she said music should inspire. Blake said I have had a lot of success on this show with people who are nothing like me. Lightning performances...... Noelle Bybee went to Team Pharrell, Brenae DeBarge went to Team Adam, and James McNeice also went to Team Adam

Sonic sang Money on My Mind by Sam Smith-- I actually really liked her voice and I thought more people would turn than Adam and Christina. The way she went up so high and came back down right away, it was so controlled. Pharrell said she has a great voice, and it came loose a little bit, and she recognized that she did, and he said, you are a force. Christina was like, I really want you on my team, and she told Sonic to bring it home. Adam called Christina a lioness.
