Tonight began with an homage to Motown Records which produced over 400 hit singles and 50 number one hits! Berry Gordy sat in the audience looking on.
01. Casey Abrams sang "I Heard it Through the Grapevine" by Marvin Gaye (1967)-- Steven said perfect pitch and perfect mix of out of control. Jennifer said, I thought about it and there is no one out there like you. Randy said you're a true original and you take chances. I liked it, but I have to be honest; I didn't love this performance. I kept trying to figure out why and I discovered it's because to me the vocals felt forced in places. It didn't feel effortless to me.
Score: 8
02. Thia Megia sang "Heat Wave" by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas (1963)-- Jennifer said continue to dig deeper because we know you have it in you, and remember to connect with your lyrics. Randy said you can really sing but keep pushing. Steven said, you took a step out, and I'm good with it. Thia did improve from last week; however, her vocals continue to be on the weak side. She has a ways to go, and if it doesn't change or improve, she'll only be around for a couple more weeks.
Score: 7
03. Jacob Lusk sang "You're All I Need to Get By" by Marvin Gaye and Tammi Terrell (1968)-- Randy said you were a true professional and there was nothing wrong with that performance. Jennifer said you made us beg and you moved us. Steven said it was beautiful and ran up onstage to hug Jacob when it was over. I didn't want this performance to be over, like Jennifer, my ears were standing at attention waiting for more. This was truly a polished performance; bravo!
Score: 10
04. Lauren Alaina sang "You Keep Me Hanging On" by The Supremes (1966)-- Steven said every time you said I hear that person inside of you, it was beautiful. Jennifer thought Lauren looked beautiful and loved the attitude that she brought to the song. Randy said Lauren is back and she has her swagger on tonight. I felt she did a good job singing the song and her vocals were solid, but there was a part of me that kept expecting her to do more with the song.
Score: 8.5
05. Stefano Langone sang "Hello" by Lionel Richie (1984)-- Jennifer said, fine, check, sing like crazy, check, all that's missing is your connection with the audience. She said when you feel it in your heart, your phrasing is going to change. You have to be able to connect with the song emotionally, look at every lyric, if you don't make a connection, throw it out, and move on to the next song. Steven agreed with Jennifer. Randy said you sounded really good but there was no real connection. I have to say, I think the advice Jennifer gave to Stefano was spot on. He is one of the best singers in the competition, imagine how much better he will be once he makes that connection. Wow!
Score: 9
06. Hayley Reinhart sang "You Really Got a Hold on Me" by Smokey Robinson and the Miracles (1962)-- Randy said it started rough but by the middle of the song the bluesy Hayley we knew and loved in Hollywood came back. Steven said, it was beautiful and touched my heart. Jennifer said you have an effortless control in your voice and the most soulful female voice in the competition. This was leaps and bounds better than any performance I have seen from her thus far. The question is, is it strong enough to keep her in the competition? That's a toss up.
Score: 8
07. Scotty McCreery sang "For Once in My Life" by Stevie Wonder (1968)-- Steven said, Scotty that was beautiful, you took a chance. Jennifer said it wasn't your best performance but it was a great version of the song and every time you hit that low note, you get me all over again. Randy said not your best vocal, but you made it your own. What I love about Scotty, and I may sound like a broken record, is that he stays true to who he is, and he does what he does well.
Score: 9
08. Pia Toscano sang "All in Love is Fair" by Stevie Wonder (1973)-- Jennifer said, same thing she said to Stefano, look and beauty, check, voice, check, feeling, check, and now all that is missing is the stage presence. You're going to need to have that because someday you're going to do a two hour concert. Randy said your voice is phenomenal and he wants to hear something other than a ballad. Steven said you are the closest star in this American Idol thing, and I know you'll do whatever it takes to prove how great you are. That was unbelievable to me, that was a performance that brought a tear to my eyes. That is what you call effortless vocals.
Score: 10
09. Paul McDonald sang "Tracks of My Tears" by Smokey Robinson and The Miracles (1965)-- Randy said you're so unique and I love that tender part of your voice at the end. Steven said I loved what you did tonight, especially with the guitar onstage. Jennifer said you're the most seasoned performer, you come out, do your thing, all you need is a producer. The distinctness of Paul's voice is what draws me in every week, it completely captures me. I love the high performance quality and he is more comfortable onstage than anyone else.
Score: 8.9
10. Naima Adedapo sang "Dancing in the Street" by Martha Reeves and the Vandellas (1964)-- Steven said this is the whole package. Jennifer said you're an exciting performer, you're my mover, my shaker, and my dancer. Randy said I know I have been hard on you these past few weeks but tonight, all of Naima showed up, and everything you did was smart. This was 100% pure fun and pure talent for me. I loved that everything was so well put together.
Score: 9.5
11. James Durbin sang "Living for the City" by Stevie Wonder (1973)-- Jennifer said you are serious business up there. Randy said when you hit your pocket, you were unbelievable. Steven said your voice was incredible. James has that great rocker voice, and his voice is always once I look forward to hearing every week.
Score: 10

The Top 12 American Idol Season 10: Songs From The Year You Were Born
The show kicked off poignantly with the judges talking about the tragedy in Japan with purchases of tonight's singles going to aid efforts. The theme tonight is "Songs from the Year You Were Born".
01. Naima Adedapo(1984) sang "What's Love Got to do With It" by Tina Turner-- I don't think I loved this because it seems like Naima had trouble this week with the same thing she had trouble with last week. The pitch was just all over the place. Steven said she has a sorcerer's grasp for melody. Jennifer said she was under the pitch and has to work on that. Randy agreed and said you looked hot but the vocals were all over the place.
Score: 6
02. Paul McDonald (1984) sang "I Guess That's Why They Call it the Blues" by Elton John-- I could tell that Paul struggled being sick and all but despite all that he has definite potential and sounded good. Jennifer said it sounded so good, you have so much soul, and so much star quality. Randy said the notes were a little pitchy but you make everything you sing your own. Steven said you define a cool dude, I love your swagger, and you have such a distinctive voice.
Score: 8
03. Thia Megia (1995) sang "Colors of the Wind" by Vanessa Williams-- Unfortunately, this was painful for me to listen to. Thia's voice was too small and this just ended up being boring for me. Randy said the vocals were okay, but he found it boring, there was nothing special about it, and it was too safe. Steven asked her to think if this song is really who she is. Jennifer said this was too safe, you need to break out from that, push out of the box.
Score: 5
04. James Durbin (1989) sang "I'll Be There for You" by Bon Jovi-- This wasn't James's best performance but he makes me smile every time he takes the stage. He continues to be passionate and grow in his performance quality. Steven said it was good James but don't get too poppy on me. Jennifer said you make me wanna sing along and you bring so much joy when you're up on the stage. Randy said the high note was very tastefully done, it was a little pitchy, but I liked that you found a way to make it your own.
Score: 9.5
05. Haley Reinhart (1990) sang "I'm Your Baby Tonight" by Whitney Houston-- This is a classic R&B song and Haley strayed too far from that. The melody of the song was lost, and the vocals were far from being on point. Jennifer commented on how beautiful Haley looked. Randy said I'm not sure that you are sure of who you are as an artist. He said that the vocals were okay but it wasn't a great performance. Steven told her to dig into the blues part of her.
Score: 6
06. Stefano Langone (1989) sang "If You Don't Know Me By Now" by Simply Red-- Stefano impressed me with his vocals in his song, he did dig deep and he showed lots of emotion. Randy said this was the best performance of the night, hot vocals! Steven commented on the beautiful phrasing that Stefano put together in his performance. Jennifer loved it and said if he works on his connection with the audience this competition is his.
Score: 10
07. Pia Toscano (1988) sang "Where Do Broken Hearts Go" by Whitney Houston-- Pia is consistent, and arguably the best female singer in this competition. Clearly, she knows who she is as an artist. Steven said, Pia, you took that song over the top. Jennifer said I liked that you gave an upbeat performance this time. Randy said hey everyone Pia is in this competition to win it.
Score: 9
08. Scotty McCreery (1993) sang "Can I Trust You With My Heart" by Travis Tritt-- Scotty is going to be a huge star, and not just in the country world but in general. This kid is crazy good and he knows who he is with no doubts and his vocals are always on. Jennifer likes how Scotty continues to grow and she urged him to keep growing and keep learning. Randy said you did Travis proud and I believe in you. Steven said, you are gonna go places.
Score: 10
09. Karen Rodriguez (1989) sang "Love Will Lead You Back" by Taylor Dane-- Karen showed me tonight why she is in this competition, not only did I enjoy her performance but I thought her vocals were exceptional. Randy said welcome back Karen. Steven said this was tan dolce. Jennifer liked how she attacked it and told her to perform to her strengths.
Score: 9.75
10. Casey Abrams (1991) sang "Smells Like Teen Spirit" by Nirvana-- This to me was a big risk that paid off big time. I loved this, and it shows me how versatile a performer Casey is. Steven said you're crazy and talented and that's the perfect combination. Jennifer said big shoes to fill, and it was a big risk, it lacked a little bit of intensity at times, but I still love you. Randy said the thing he likes about Casey is he thinks big risk first and commerce second, and he is fearless.
Score: 9.75
11. Lauren Alaina (1994) sang "I'm The Only One" by Melissa Etheridge-- Despite the fact that Lauren is sick she still managed to sound good. This young lady has lots of poise. Jennifer said you kept with the melody of this song, yet you made it your own. Randy said despite being sick he liked what she did this week. Steven said Lauren, you're a shining star; you did it again.
Score: 9
12. Jacob Lusk (1987) sang "Alone" by Heart-- Jacob is back tonight and in top form. I loved his rendition of "Alone", he took it to church like I thought he would. Randy said you lost your way for like two bars but then you found your way back quick. Steven said the gospel had a baby and named it Jacob Lusk. Jennifer said you give yourself completely to every performance.
Score: 9.75

The Top 13 American Idol Season 10: Songs from their Idols
1. Lauren Alaina sang "Any Man of Mine" by Shania Twain-- Lauren Alaina has a wonderful performance quality about her and she can sing just about anything. What is missing right now is the fire and desire within her to win this competition. Steven said I love that song but it should have been a little bit more kick ass. Randy said we want you to sing something that will make you shine beyond belief because we know you have that talent. Jennifer said we love you but we want to see that you want it.
Score: 9.75
2. Casey Abrams sang "With a Little Help from My Friends" by Joe Cocker-- I liked this performance very much, but I did not by any means feel it was one of his best performances. Jennifer felt that Casey blew her away! Randy said I always look forward to seeing you sing. You make it fun and I loved it. Steven said you're a rainbow of talent, and I love what you do, you're a plethora of passion.
Score: 8
3. Ashthon Jones sang "When You Tell Me That You Love Me" by Diana Ross-- Randy said you grew as a singer in that performance. Jennifer felt the song wasn't well known enough but still thinks Ashthon is amazing. Steven has confidence in her. I felt this performance was forgettable at best, it was okay but nothing special.
Score: 7
4. Paul McDonald sang "Come Pick Me Up" by Ryan Adams-- I did not love this song choice but I love Paul. I love his character and I love who he is as a person and what he brings to the Idol stage. I don't think there has ever been anyone like him on the show before. Steven said love the character and rasp in your voice, a lil pitchy, watch out. Jennifer felt he was unique and moved the crowd. Randy said I love the character of you and I love Ryan Adams.
Score: 8.5
5. Pia Toscano sang "All By Myself" by Celine Dion-- I think Pia is a rare find and I have felt that since the beginning. Her voice can tackle all those Mariah, Whitney, and Celine songs without question. Jennifer felt she topped last week, really beautiful. Score: 8.75
8. Jacob Lusk sang "I Believe I Can Fly" by R. Kelly-- Again, I am going to have to agree with Randy. Jacob has this signature start to every song where he opens his mouth and you can tell that it's him singing. The middle of the song he lost his way a bit, and it was a little pitchy, but in the end he found his way again. I loved the way this performance ended. Jennifer said, you're amazing Jacob. Steven said, I cannot even judge you cause you're that good.
Score: 8
9. Thia Megia sang "Smile" by Michael Jackson-- Randy loved the beginning and felt Thia had a sound reminscent to Michael Jackson and Adele; he didn't like the jazzy part in the middle and end. Ashthon should have sang something more recognizable so that people would have been able to relate more because I think she is extremely talented.
Score: 9

Score: 7

Score: 7

11. Lauren Alaina sang Turn on the Radio by Reba McEntire-- Jennifer said you're so naturally good. Randy said you don't even know how good you are, you're like Kelly meets Carrie. Steven said I love you, you're the best, your voice goes from here to there, and we haven't seen the best of you yet.
Score: 9.5
12. Pia Toscano sang I'll Stand by You by The Pretenders-- Randy said that was unbelievable and all the judges gave her a standing ovation. Steven called it gorgeous. Jennifer said I knew you were a stand out and that was out of this world. I have to say for me, that was one of the strongest performances by a female singer on American Idol ever.
Score: 10
1. TaTynisa Wilson sang Only Girl in the World by Rihanna-- Steven liked it a lot. Jennifer told her that she brought it home. Randy thought it was okay, nothing special or different about it; I agree with Randy.
Score: 5
2. Naima Adedapo sang Summertime by Porgy and Bess-- Randy liked how Naima ended the song. Steven said she sounds like a new Ella Fitzgerald. I like the sound of Naima; I don't know if she is strong enough for this competition.
Score: 8

Score: 9
4. Rachel Zevita sang Criminal by Fiona Apple-- Steven found it to be too Broadway. Randy called it not good at all and said Fiona's song was unrecognizable. Jennifer said when you're on stage you have to think about what people are going to think of you.
Score: 4

American Idol Season 10: Top 24
American Idol Season 10 started off by introducing the public to the Top 24 for the first time.
On Tuesday the Top 12 Guys performed and on Wednesday the Top 12 Ladies performed; my overall opinion is that the guys outperformed the ladies by a mile. I will say that the ladies overall are more impressive than past seasons. The guys are more well rounded, they are not just singers but musicians.
These are my predictions for the Top 10 (in random order):
James Durbin
Scotty McCreery
Paul McDonald
Jacob Lusk
Casey Abrams
Ashthon Jones
Karen Rodriguez
Thia Megia
Lauren Alaina
Pia Toscano
These are my Wild Card Picks:
Guys: (will be between these 3)
Tim Halperin
Robbie Rosen
Stefano Langone
Ladies: (will be between these 3)
Naima Adedapo
Kendra Chantelle
Julie Zorilla
Here's a brief recap:
1. Clint Jun Gamboa sang Superstition by Stevie Wonder-- A little bit amateurish to me, it seemed like an amateur wanting to be a star. Jennifer said it was good and worked the nerves out. Randy said it wasn't karaoke.
Score (out of 10, 10 being the best): 6
2. Jovany Bareto sang I'll Be by Edwin McCain-- I liked this but I definitely didn't love it. Edwin McCain is a huge fan of the show and I don't know that he would have liked this. Randy said this felt very karaoke and it was not better than the original.
Score: 5
3. Jordan Dorsey sang OMG! by Usher-- This was painful to listen to and watch, and it's a shame because he chose the wrong song. He should have picked something like What's Goin On by Marvin Gaye or Power of Love by Luther Vandross. Jennifer said the song wasn't you. Randy called it pitchy and all over the place. Steven said this was not my favorite performance of you.
Score: 5
4. Tim Halperin sang Streetcorner Symphony by Rob Thomas-- Steven said the song let him down. Jennifer said the song didn't show people who he is as an artist. Randy echoed the other two judges. Tim sang the chorus strongly but the verses were weak at best.
Score: 7.5
5. Brett Lowenstern sang Light my Fire by The Doors-- This song is way too old for him; he should have been singing something more contemporary. He agreed that there were some problems, especially at the beginning of the performance when asked by the judges.
Score: 7
6. James Durbin sang You Got Another Thing Comin' by Judas Priest-- Steven called it f****n crazy good. Jennifer called it real, natural, and said it comes from the inside. I expected James to be this good because I think he wants it more than most people.
Score: 10
7. Robbie Rosen sang Angel by Sara McLachlin-- Steven said you sing ballads like no one's business. Jennifer said when you sing you tell a story, you are a very special singer. Randy said you never quite settled into the performance. I feel that all the judges were correct.
Score: 8
8. Scotty McCreery sang Letters from Home by John Michael Montgomery-- Steven said you couldn't have picked a better song. Jennifer said you are born to sing country music. Randy said he made a nice choice. I have to say that when I watch Scotty sing and when I hear him, I can tell that he has a great love for singing and music.
Score: 9.5
9. Stefano Langone sang Just the Way You Are by Bruno Mars-- Steven said, loved you; you are so good. Jennifer said there's nothing awkward about you up there. Randy said keep in mind we're looking for someone who can be on the radio right now and you have that. I really liked Stefano but I don't think this was the correct choice of song for him. He may make it in based on the girls just loving him.
Score: 8.5
10. Paul McDonald sang Maggie May by Rod Stewart-- Paul sang this song different from Rod Stewart yet he kept the melody of the song. Steven said he loved the character of his voice. Jennifer said I love that you smile when you sing, it was a good performance. Randy said I'm a fan and I don't think we've ever had someone like you in the competition ever before.
Score: 9
11. Jacob Lusk sang A House is Not A Home by Luther Vandross-- Steven said I'm honored to be in your presence, you make me wanna cry, whatever you have, I wanna bathe in it. Randy said I think we're so lucky to have you and you did Luther proud. Jennifer said Luther was my favorite of all time and he's gone, but now we have you, and that's the amazing thing about this show.
Score: 10
12. Casey Abrams sang I Put a Spell on You by Screamin Jay Hawkins-- Casey has the ability to make me smile when he sings no matter what he sings. Steven said in your mind good and ourof your mind real. Jennifer called him sexy and said she could tell he wants this; she loved it. Randy said you tranform yourself into the spirit of the song.
Score: 10

Part 2 The Top Songs of 2010
OMG!-- Usher featuring will.i.am: It didn't garner the critical reception but it did garner an enormous amount of airplay. It was arguably one of the songs of the summer along with Katy Perry's California Gurls. Many critics bashed the use of auto tune in the song but it was hard to deny that cool club thumping vibe; oh my gosh!
My fave line: Oh my gosh
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: #1
US Hot Dance Club Songs (Billboard): #3
US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard): #3
US Pop Songs (Billboard): #2
The Only Exception-- Paramore: It didn't bust on to the charts, it didn't make its way to number one, but it's been the most popular single ever for Paramore and lead singer Hayley Williams. Glee asked Lea Michele to interpret the song by having her character Rachel sing about her boyfriend Finn. The song is a full out love story, a switch for the alternative band that usually sings about despressing issues, "doom and gloom".
My fave line: That was the day that I promised
I'd never sing of love
If it does not exist
But darling,
You, are, the only exception
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: #24
Only Girl (In the World)-- Rihanna: "After going deep and dark on her last album, Rihanna has returned to the dance floor with her new single", said James Dinh of MTV News. This song was reminiscent of past hits "Please Don't Stop the Music" and "Shut Up and Drive", both songs that put Rihanna on the road to pop super-stardom. She has truly come full circle and is poised to make 2011 a banner year.
My fave line: Want you to make me feel like I’m the only girl in the world
Like I’m the only one that you’ll ever love
Like I’m the only one who knows your heart
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: #1
US Hot Dance Club Songs (Billboard): #1
US Pop Songs (Billboard): #1
Power-- Kanye West: The song was used for the movie trailers for "The Social Network", a movie about one of the most powerful men in the world, Mark Zuckerberg. The argument could be made that "Power" is sung and written by one of the most powerful men in rap music, Kanye West. We love to hate him sometimes, but then there's this part of us that wants to like him cause his music is just so damn good.
Time magazine even went as far as to name it the number three song of 2010! Knowing Kanye, he probably felt it should have been number one.
My fave line: I’m livin’ in the 21st century
Doin’ something mean to it
Do it better than anybody you ever seen do it
Screams from the haters, got a nice ring to it
I guess every superhero need his theme music
Charts:
U.S. Billboard Rap Songs: #14
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: #22
U.S. Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: #22
Raise Your Glass-- Pink: The song is a celebration promoting race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, human and animal rights. Pink told a story of two female friends of hers who marries one another in her backyard. At the end of the wedding, the mom of one of the bride's cried saying, why can't this be legal? Pink said she was heartbroken. If anyone can get a point across in a loud way, it's Pink, and she makes a pretty good Rosie the Riveter to boot.
My fave line: So raise your glass if you are wrong,
In all the right ways,
All my underdogs,
Charts:
US Adult Pop Songs (Billboard): #1
US Adult Contemporary (Billboard): #13
US Billboard Hot 100: #1
US Pop Songs (Billboard): #1
Right Thru Me-- Nicki Minaj: No new artist created quite as much buzz in 2010 as Nicki Minaj. She had a lot on her back, a lot of pressure to contend with, and she lived up to it with poise and that fire about her that all her fans love. Minaj has since followed up her second single Right Thru Me from her debut album Pink Friday with Moment for Life with Cash Money label mate Drake. It looks like 2011 will be just as successful and Moment for Life may prove to be true for Nicki.
My fave line: You let me win, you let me ride
you let me rock, you let me slide
and when they looking you let me hide
defend my honour, protect my pride
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: 26
US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: 4
US Rap Songs (Billboard): 3
US Pop Songs: 39
Runaway-- Kanye West: This is the best way to describe Runaway- "In 2010, no other song was so crazily epic or jaw-droppingly gorgeous — not on the radio, not anywhere," so said Rolling Stone magazine. I remember the first time I heard Runaway and watched the video, I was absolutely mesmerized by not just ballerinas dancing but by the music and then when the lyrics started, wow. The only way to describe it is a masterpiece. My Dark Twisted Fantasy may be Kanye's best album to date.
My fave line: Run away from me, baby
Run away
Run away from me, baby
Run away
Doesn't have to get crazy,
Why can't she just run away?
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: 12
US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard): 30
US Rap Songs (Billboard): 9
September-- Daughtry: It's been almost five years since Chris Daughtry left the American Idol stage and in those years he has turned into a bona fied superstar. Daughtry headlines shows now and last summer the single September climbed the charts. The song was co written by Daughtry and band mate Josh Steeley and chronicles summer fading into fall and having to leave that small town to make something of yourself. Five years ago, that's exactly what Chris Daughtry was doing.
My fave line: How the time passed away, all the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste? All the promises we made
One by one they vanish just the same
Charts:
U.S. Billboard Adult Pop Songs: 2
U.S. Billboard Adult Contemporary: 2
U.S. Billboard Pop Songs: 24
U.S. Billboard Radio Songs: 19
Teenage Dream-- Katy Perry: Katy Perry said her song "Teenage Dream" is about "kind of like feeling that way when you were a teenager: really emotional, really invested. ... It's intense being in love and being a teenager." Teenage Dream brought out that teenager in all of us who aren't and for those who are, Perry related to them in a way many artist don't. The song not only topped pop charts but dance charts (as was made obvious by the video).
My fave lines:
We can dance until we die
You and I
We'll be young forever
You make me
Feel like
I'm living a Teenage Dream
The way you turn me on
I can't sleep
Let's runaway
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back
My heart stops
When you look at me
Just one touch
Now baby I believe
This is real
So take a chance
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back
I might get your heart racing
In my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Let you put your hands on me
In my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: 1
US Pop Songs (Billboard): 1
US Adult Pop Songs (Billboard): 1
US Hot Dance Club Songs (Billboard): 1
There Goes My Baby-- Usher: The second official single from Raymond vs. Raymond it earned him a Grammy award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. There Goes My Baby is a song that brings me back to classic Usher (i.e. Nice and Slow, U Make Me Wanna...also reminiscent of classic R&B). For all those who said this style is played out, take a look at the chart position. ;-)
My fave line: there goes my baby
(oo girl look at you)
you don't know how good it feels to call you my girl
there goes my baby
loving everything you do
oo girl look at you
Charts:
U.S Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: 2
U Smile-- Justin Bieber: Usher's protege, this list would not be complete without a Justin Bieber song. Last week on Glee, one of the boys sang a Justin Bieber song in order to make this girl love him a little bit more, and guess what? It worked. Justin Bieber says U Smile was a throwback to all those great songs he listened to growing up. I wonder if singers will be saying the same thing about U Smile in 20 years?
My fave line: You smile I smile
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: 27
US Pop Songs: 26
Unthinkable (I'm Ready)-- Alicia Keys: Personally one of my favorite songs of all time. This song is honest, deep, and it comes from such a personal place. "For an artist who has built her career on songs about love, lust and heartache, Keys has never sounded quite as vulnerable and exposed as she does here," a sentiment expressed perfectly by Mariel Concepcion from Billboard magazine. The song was co-written by Keys, Drake, longtime friend Kerry Brothers Jr., and Noah "40" Shebib. Drake's musical influence is definitely noticeable on the track; Keys promised there would be more of her and Drake in the future. Let's hope.
My fave line: Moment of honesty
Someones gotta take the lead tonight
Whose it gonna be?
I'm gonna sit right here
And tell you all that comes to me
If you have something to say
You should say it right now
Charts:
U.S. Billboard Hot 100: 21
U.S. Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs: 1
What's My Name-- Rihanna feat. Drake: It's the collaboration that everyone wanted to happen all year, but no one was sure it would happen. Rihanna and Drake had a rumored romance in which Rihanna broke it off with the Canadian rapper just as he started to get serious about her. The song brings to light their flirty nature with one another, even more evident in the video. Rihanna even goes as far as saying, "he's the only person I thought would really understand the melody of the song".
My fave line: Rihanna: Ooh na na, what’s my name
What's my name, whats my name
Drake:The things we could do in twenty minutes girl
Say my name, say my name
Wear it out, its getting hot, crack a window, air it out
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: 1
US Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs (Billboard): 2
US Pop Songs (Billboard): 4
US Hot Dance Club Songs (Billboard): 6
We R Who We R-- Kesha: The first single off her second album is an anthem of having pride in who you are. Kesha says she wanted to inspire people to be themselves, it celebrates quirks and what makes you who you are. Although many say Kesha has a similar sound throughout all her songs, it's a sound that her fans can't get enough of.
My fave line: Hot and dangerous
If you’re one of us, then roll with us
‘Cause we make the hipsters fall in love
And we’ve got hot-pants on enough
And yes of course because we’re running this town just like a club
And no, you don’t wanna mess with us
Got Jesus on my necklace
Charts:
US Billboard Hot 100: 1
US Hot Dance Club Songs (Billboard): 27
US Pop Songs (Billboard): 2
My fave line: Oh my gosh

My fave line: How the time passed away, all the trouble that we gave
And all those days we spent out by the lake
Has it all gone to waste? All the promises we made
One by one they vanish just the same

Teenage Dream-- Katy Perry: Katy Perry said her song "Teenage Dream" is about "kind of like feeling that way when you were a teenager: really emotional, really invested. ... It's intense being in love and being a teenager." Teenage Dream brought out that teenager in all of us who aren't and for those who are, Perry related to them in a way many artist don't. The song not only topped pop charts but dance charts (as was made obvious by the video).
My fave lines:
We can dance until we die
You and I
We'll be young forever
You make me
Feel like
I'm living a Teenage Dream
The way you turn me on
I can't sleep
Let's runaway
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back
My heart stops
When you look at me
Just one touch
Now baby I believe
This is real
So take a chance
And don't ever look back
Don't ever look back
I might get your heart racing
In my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight
Let you put your hands on me
In my skin-tight jeans
Be your teenage dream tonight

There Goes My Baby-- Usher: The second official single from Raymond vs. Raymond it earned him a Grammy award for Best Male R&B Vocal Performance. There Goes My Baby is a song that brings me back to classic Usher (i.e. Nice and Slow, U Make Me Wanna...also reminiscent of classic R&B). For all those who said this style is played out, take a look at the chart position. ;-)
My fave line: there goes my baby
(oo girl look at you)
you don't know how good it feels to call you my girl
there goes my baby
loving everything you do
oo girl look at you

U Smile-- Justin Bieber: Usher's protege, this list would not be complete without a Justin Bieber song. Last week on Glee, one of the boys sang a Justin Bieber song in order to make this girl love him a little bit more, and guess what? It worked. Justin Bieber says U Smile was a throwback to all those great songs he listened to growing up. I wonder if singers will be saying the same thing about U Smile in 20 years?
My fave line: You smile I smile

The Top Songs of 2010: Part 1
Airplanes-- B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams of Paramore: Hayley first heard the song while out on tour and recorded her part. She and B.o.B. never actually met until they sang "Airplanes" together at the MTV Video Music Awards for the first time. B.o.B. was a major Hayley fan but never expected to work with her so soon. Looks like these two have great respect for one another.
My fave line: "Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?"

The song itself has an earthy blues and rock feel, it's hard not to hit the replay button after hearing it.
My fave line: Fast, on a rough road riding
High, through the mountains climbing
Twisting, turning further from my home.
Young, like a new moon rising
Fierce, through the rain and lightning
Wandering out into this great unknown.

According to Perry's interview with Rolling Stone, the song is an answer to "Empire State of Mind" that dominated the charts in 2009. This certainly is not her only hit for 2010, but it is the song that kicked off an epic year for her.

The song has numerous Grammy Nominations including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.

Pink performed an acrobatic act high up in the air while not missing one note. Glenn Gamboa of Newsday commented, "Pink proved that you don’t have to be shocking or over-the-top to be the best or the most-talked-about. You just have to be amazing."
My fave line: It's only half past the point of oblivion
The hourglass on the table, the walk before the run

Have you ever felt this way?

"How Low" and "My Chick Bad" were both featured on So You Think You Can Dance. How Low was nominated for Best Solo Rap Performance at the Grammy's. Despite the fact that the song was released in 2009, it charted in 2010. Bridges also shared some spotlight with Justin Bieber on Bieber's hit song "Baby".

Just The Way You Are-- Bruno Mars: Mars says that songs like Joe Cocker's You Are So Beautiful and Eric Clapton's The Way You Look Tonight inspired him to write the pure love song that he called Just The Way You Are. He says the song is not deep and poetic, he's just telling a love story, and let's be honest who would not want someone to bring these lyrics to life for them? The song is up for Best Male Pop Vocal Performance at The Grammys.

It is up for six well deserved Grammy's, and chronicles the story of two separated lovers who long to reconnect through a phone call in the middle of the night. The emotional connection had fans wanting, actually no, needing more. Lady A (as their fans call them) went from small town tours to super stardom.

Not Afraid-- Eminem: The first single off his comeback album Recovery, Not Afraid shot straight to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 charts. It is only the second rap single to debut in the number one spot. Not Afraid came at the perfect time for Eminem, it showed his vulnerability and many saw a real committment on Eminen's part to the music. Not Afraid promotes a message that anyone can appreciate, and I appreciate that he leads the way at this year's Grammys with eight nominations.
My fave line: And I just can't keep living this way
So starting today, I'm breaking out of this cage
I'm standing up, I'ma face my demons
I'm manning up, I'ma hold my ground

Not Myself Tonight-- Christina Aguilera: In my opinion, the most underrated single of 2010. Reading over some of the critics reviews of the song gave me goose bumps; here are some of the phrases that describe the song: James Montgomery of MTV News said, "...the kind of track you'd expect to hear rattling the speakers at the massive, multi-level clubs of Europe". Bill Lamb from About.com gave the song a positive review: "Whomever might think that vocal prowess makes little difference in a mainstream pop song needs to listen once to Christina Aguilera's stellar new single "Not Myself Tonight." The electropop tune sounds like it could be a bit ordinary until the vocals really kick in about 45 seconds into the song. From that point on Christina Aguilera towers over much of the competition proving why she is frequently included in the shortest lists of today's top pop singers". Vibe magazine was impressed with the song: "With a writing assist by Ester Dean and Polow Da Don on the boards, Christina sounds as if she's managed to coalesce all her personalities into a comfortably edgy, grown-ass woman ready to slap up Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, and Katy Perry (she's "kissing all the boys and girls!") at the gay club. Frenetic with sparkling synths, blaring snares and glints of soul, Xtina's obviously found herself the right babysitter, because the f***-me pumps are out and ready for wearing". All I have to say is, wow.
