The Top Songs of 2012: My Opinions, Enough Said.

Adorn by Miguel-- Admit it, you've probably never heard of him (heard of the song Sure Thing?) , but after you hear this song, you'll want to know that much more. The song was written and produced by the newcomer who said it was inspired by a series of dreams. It also scored him three Grammy nominations: Song of the Year, Best R&B Song, and Best R&B Performance. Adorn is a lyricist's dream.



Call Me Maybe by Carly Rae Jepsen-- If you didn't hear this song all over the radio, then where were you? Canadian born Jepsen had a number one hit with this song which also happened to be her debut single. Despite the fact that the music video is lame, it didn't stop the song from topping many 2012 music lists, including those for itunes and MTV as well as earning two Grammy nods.

Catch My Breath by Kelly Clarkson-- She continues to prove that the show American Idol actually has some clout. She also sounds happy, maybe it's because she truly is, newly engaged, Clarkson continues to be a force in pop music. I love the message of the song, it's about moving forward, and it's so positive and uplifting.



Climax by Usher-- When I first heard Climax, I didn't know it was Usher, and then a friend reminded me that no other male singer on the scene today could sound like that. Usher stressed that "Climax" is not about sex but instead about the complication of relationships. It's about whether or not you're able to commit; Usher, I commit.



Diamonds by Rihanna-- A lot of people dismissed Diamonds as a weak Rihanna ballad, but they couldn't be more wrong. I like this new direction that she's taking; it's deep. Now if only her intelligence in men matched her talent and she distanced herself from a singer with the initials C.B. The song is about love and I just feel good when I listen to it, not necessarily jumping for joy, but at ease. It's beautiful.



The Fighter by Gym Class Heroes and Ryan Tedder-- As I thought about what happened throughout 2012, I almost forgot the London Games. The pure thrill of getting to watch elite athletes compete on an international stage and show their stuff is like nothing else. The Fighter also contains lyrics and a certain "fight" to it which is so inspiring.



Girl on Fire by Alicia Keys-- Welcome back Alicia Keys, and because your music is so good and so conceptual and essential for women's souls everywhere, may you never leave us again. Girl on Fire, Keys says, is about her taking control, and, she says, it was inspired by all the new things in her life. Since her last album Keys got married and became a mom, but one thing hasn't changed and that's her amazing spirit.



Give Your Heart a Break by Demi Lovato-- Many of her fans and critics believe that Skyscraper was her breakthrough song, but I beg to differ because in a year full of dynamic female voices, Give Your Heart a Break was one of the most memorable pop songs of 2012.



Home by Phillip Phillips-- Phil Phillips was an unlikely Idol winner, but nonetheless, here we are, nine months later, and Home became the best selling Idol coronation song. I think it's because he is this unlikely here, so unassuming, so humble, and yet so talented, powerful with that quiet and low rock voice. I can't wait for his debut, The World from the Side of the Moon to give birth to yet another brilliant single.



I Knew You Were Trouble by Taylor Swift-- Taylor Swift continues to just surprise me in such a good way. Yes, I am tired of all these dead end relationships that she gets herself in to, and if only she realized that she deserves so much better, she wouldn't get in to half of them. But maybe there's a method to her madness, maybe it inspires these wonderful songs, her own personal works of art. And then, would I want her to stop? I Knew You Were Trouble sounds like nothing she has ever done before, and yet she sings it in such a convincing voice, and it is so Taylor.



I Won't Give Up by Jason Mraz-- The sweetness and straightforwardness of I Won't Give Up, the first single off Love is a Four Letter Word transcends boundaries previously placed by Mraz himself. He makes such an emotional connection with the song and the listener that you or in my case, I, cannot help but be taken in. I feel every single word of I Won't Give Up and I am inspired, because as Mraz said, everyone has something in life that they believe is worth fighting for.



Let Me Love You (Until You Learn to Love Yourself) by Neyo-- Neyo is as famous for being a songwriter as he is for being a singer. So when Australian singer, Sia said she wrote a song for Neyo, it must have been really good for him to agree to it, because as Neyo put it, "no one knows me better than me" (on why he writes his own songs). The risk paid off because it isn't done climbing the charts yet.



Let's Go by Calvin Harris featuring Neyo-- Few who know Calvin Harris can question the influence he has had on the music industry these past couple of years. He has really brought a whole new sound to the forefront of the industry and people aren't just listening to it, they're dancing to it.



Lights by Ellie Goulding-- You may not believe me when I tell you this, but I knew who Ellie Goulding was a couple of years ago when few in the U.S. did. She is a talent to be reckoned with, and if you think for one moment that she is a one hit wonder, listen to Anything Can Happen. It should get as much record play as Lights did in my opinion, and this is my plea to radio. If my praise of her isn't enough, just ask William and Katherine what they think of her.



One More Night by Maroon 5--  I bet many of you think that the reason Maroon 5 is popular right now because Adam Levine has been gracing the stage on The Voice. I would be willing to bet anyone who believes that that Maroon 5 would still be making hit after hit. What I really like about One More Night is the easy beat and its honesty. The song is about a relationship going wrong and Levine admits to his part in it. I just love a man who can be honest.




Over You by Miranda Lambert-- What I love about Over You besides Miranda Lambert's sincere and emotional vocal is the story behind the song. It was written by Lambert and her husband Blake Shelton about a personal experience of his. When Blake was a teenager, his older brother was killed in a car accident and this song is about that experience; Blake said he would be honored for his wife Miranda to sing this song for him. It actually won Song of the Year for the couple at the 2012 CMA Awards.



R.I.P. by Rita Ora-- She's a rising star, and what I love about Rita Ora is how bad ass she is. As a woman, she comes across as this fearless stage presence. R.I.P. was actually written by Drake, originally for Rihanna, his unrequited love, but it went to Ora when she heard the song and expressed interest. Ora said she told Drake that she needed this song because it was one of those "women empowering songs". Wow, couldn't agree more, and I cannot wait to see what she does next as an artist.



Some Nights by Fun.-- For a little Indie pop band, Fun. sure came from out of nowhere and it seemed like they went from being unknowns to being one of the most popular artists of 2012 overall. Between "We Are Young" and "Some Nights", Fun. scored six Grammy nominations. Both songs also got "gleeked" (meaning the Glee kids sang the heck out of it). They've even drawn comparisons to Queen, and just imagine, this is only the beginning.



Spectrum by Florence and the Machine-- Florence Welch continues to push the envelope and not only challenge herself, but us with new sounds. She proves herself as a songwriter and a vocalist who has legit chops. I heard her sing notes in Say My Name that I hadn't heard before.  Her voice truly soars; this song has a beautiful element of freedom to it.



Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You) by Kelly Clarkson-- She's the only artist this year to appear two times on my list, and boy oh boy, did she ever earn it. This song, like many others on this list promote female empowerment and garnered Clarkson several Grammy nominations as well as number one status on five different U.S. music charts. Stronger became Clarkson's most successful U.S. single. The other part of Stronger that I really enjoy is that when Clarkson sings it, I believe it.



Take Care by Drake featuring Rihanna-- I was waiting for another Find Your Love, and what does that mean to me? It means a song where I feel Drake pours his heart out to the ladies and shows us his oh so sensitive side, and then came Take Care featuring Rihanna. Drake talks about his feelings and this relationship that he wants to be in, and this woman that he can't stop caring about. What more can a girl ask for?



Try by Pink!--  Lyrically and vocally, I love Try; it's one of Pink's most genuine songs. The song is about what we all do every day, we get up and try. The questions that she asks throughout the song are quite deep, like, "why do we all fall in love so easy?" She attempts, not to answer the question in the song, but instead to offer a resolution. It's enough for me.



Wanted by Hunter Hayes-- He wins my award for breakout country act of the year, and he is young (only 21), and he's super talented. Hayes, who wrote Wanted says what he says in the song is something he wanted to say to someone he was in a relationship with but instead he decided to say it in music. The song has a mature and sweet message without being corny. The song definitely puts him on the map in country.



Wide Awake by Katy Perry-- The past two years have been a whirlwind for Katy Perry who seemed to have hit after hit and in the midst of it all, her marriage hit a snag and ended in divorce. Wide Awake was Perry's response to it all, and it gave her her ninth consecutive Billboard number one. She has vowed to take some time off from music; I hope she doesn't stay away too long.

My Favorite Things: End of August 2012 Edition

Following the Olympics in London and lots of reality show madness, I came to the realization that I had neglected, "My Favorite Things" series. I love bringing the things that I love to you. Of course they aren't always things, something they are people, or music, or TV shows, or events. I have so many ideas now that I having a running list that I hope to eventually write about.

1. If it's good enough for Jennifer Lopez, it's more than good enough for me. I love L'Oreal's Colour Riche Le Gloss; it smells good, it's not too thick or sticky and the colors are great. It also packs a really nice shine. I love Nude Illusion, Saucy Mauve, and Really Rose. Try it out and let me know what colors are your favorite.

2. Stars, stars, and more stars--- the star whether printed on clothing or as an accessory seems to be just about everywhere right now going into fall. I love the star charms on SarahChloe.com

Often times, I like wearing black, blues, and denim and bold earrings are a way for me to make my outfit trendy without making me feel anything but myself. 4. I recognize that lace is going to be big this fall but not everyone can pull it off. Not only that, most lace items tend to be on the pricey side. I was so excited when I discovered this lace top, it's mostly cotton which I love, and it's machine wash. I must run to H&M immediately and purchase at least one.

5. Last but certainly not least, Phillip Phillips is officially a music star with his single "Home" which enjoyed lots of airplay at The London Games. It was the theme song for the U.S. Women's Gymnastics Team. He sounds a little like Springsteen with shades of Coldplay, and this fall his debut album is scheduled to be released. While many are still wondering what the hoopla is all about, I'm just content knowing and understanding the talent that is Phil Phillips.

Reality Show Round-up: How did American Idol and Dancing with the Stars End?

I never knew going into the week that I was in for such surprises as I tuned in to the finales of American Idol and Dancing with the Stars.

At the end of Tuesday's performance show, there was no clear cut winner for American Idol. Jessica Sanchez threw down with spot on powerhouse vocals, but an odd final song. Phillip Phillips, well, he was Phillip Phillips. He turned in two so-so performances, but his final song was stellar. I thought that about evened things out, maybe even gave Jessica Sanchez the edge. At the start of Season 11, the judges had proclaimed that it was the year of the girl, and after listening to the talent, I genuinely believed it to be true. I admit, in these past few years, I've been all about the boys, but I really thought in the back of my mind that Jessica Sanchez was going to take this, even if only by a narrow margin. It's funny, when Ryan Seacrest announced the winner, he didn't even say it was close. Did Phillip Phillips win by a landslide? I don't think young teenage girls were the only ones who called up and voted for Phillip, I bet a lot of grandmas did too. But, did no majority of any female demographic out there pick up the phone and vote for Jessica Sanchez?

This win begs the question, will a young lady ever win American Idol again? The last time a lady won was in 2007 Season 6 of Idol when a young Jordin Sparks beat Blake Lewis in the final (thank goodness!). Out of eleven seasons of the show, only four females have won, Kelly Clarkson, Fantasia, Carrie Underwood, and Jordin Sparks. I think we can rightfully say that Jessica Sanchez belongs or belonged in that company of females singers. Her performances of The Prayer, I Will Always Love You, Sweet Dreams, and I Have Nothing were four of the single best performances, not just of this season, but arguably throughout all the seasons of Idol. Let's not forget that the judges said she could complete with the current popular female singers of today, like Beyonce. There's no question; at the age of 16, Sanchez has poise, power vocals, confidence, swagger, and humility, all qualities tough to find in most artists.

I think this is deeper than who called up to vote for who. I think this is a gender war in a way, but not in the way you think. I think women, generally, find it difficult to route for one another. Our first inclinations many times is to compete, to feel jealous, or to envy; I am woman enough to admit it. For the most part, I have no problem admitting that Jessica Sanchez was hands down deserving of this win. I also have no issue saying that Phillip Phillips worked hard, struggled with a bum kidney, and pushed his way to the end.

Jessica said in an interview, following the finale, that she knew Phillip would win, and that he deserved it, that he had worked so hard. I agree, but I would like to make the argument that the majority of the top finalists worked hard. What about Joshua Ledet? He worked the stage every week, like he had been there his entire life; he worked hard. Skylar Laine was a pro, like a young Reba who got up there every week with a fierceness that was impossible to deny; she worked hard. And what about young Jessica Sanchez, at the age of 16, she probably had more to prove than most. She got up there every week, humble, turning in not one bad performance. The judges used their "save" on her and she was shocked! I think the only person who was shocked that Jessica was saved, was Jessica. Jessica worked hard. Maybe at the end there are no winners and losers. If they worked hard, they won, and now they're going on tour. After the tour is over, some contestants will go back to their lives, and some will start new lives. Some will receive recording contracts and some will not. The experience is special, it shapes you, and maybe it's what you do with that experience that makes you a winner. If not, what was all the hard work for?

I was pleasantly surprised with Dancing with the Stars but I have felt that way the entire season. This was, by far, the best cast that they have ever had, and I went into thinking who are these people? They're superstars. The top three was exactly as it should be, William Levy and Cheryl Burke were the second runners up, Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas were the first runners up, and Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd were crowned as Ballroom Champions. Rightfully so, Donald worked his tush off and was underscored for most of the season. He took bigger risks than anyone else, and those risks paid off because they were executed so well. Peta went from being voted off first to winning the entire competition. Kudos to her for listening to her partner, finding out the styles and dances that fit him well, and choreographing to those strengths. Early talk of the upcoming season of the show is that it will be an All Star cast of past contestants. Donald has already said he won't come back, but let's not count out Gilles Marini! Congratulations to all the amazing celebrities and pros from Season 14. A friend of mine who has never watched the show before even became a fan, and that's a huge feat, trust me.

American Idol Season 11: The Top 4 Are California Dreamin' and Inspiring Us

Round 1, We all did some California Dreamin'. I think Joshua and Jessica beat Hollie and Phillip by a shade in round 1. Although, I will fully admit that Miss Hollie is peaking at the right time, her performance of Faithfully by Journey sounded good in all the right places. She hit the big notes right on without hesitation.

Phillip Phillips started off the show with Have You Ever Seen the Rain by Creedence Clearwater Revival-- Jen enjoyed the vocal quality of the song. Randy felt it was rough at first, but when he hit the chorus it was good.

Hollie Cavanagh sang Faithfully by Journey-- Randy thinks Hollie is peaking at the right time, I completely agree. Jen loved seeing her growth and journey. Steven praised the song choice.

Joshua Ledet sang You Raise Me Up by Josh Groban-- Jen said another great performance, really great, keep it consistent til the end. Steven said I love the way you sing, courage is fear. Randy said I can never wait to see what you do. You're an amazing artist with a ginormous career ahead of you. I love how Josh made this into a gospel version of the song, it was a great move for him.

Jessica Sanchez sang Steal Away by Etta James-- Jen said, compared to your would be female contemporaries, you're one of the best, and your vocal quality is amazing. Steven told her she nailed it and Randy said it was amazing again. The soul in this performance was undeniable for me.

I think this was a three way tie between Phillip, Joshua, and Jessica. However, I do want to mention that Jennifer Hudson sang that song on American Idol and she sang it better than Jessica Sanchez.

Phillip Phillips sang Volcano by Damien Rice-- Steven said it was really beautiful and that he has never heard Phillip sing like that before. Jen said very few people could pull that off and it's a testament to who you are as an artist. Randy said it was one of his best performances of the season.

Hollie Cavanagh sang I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie Raitt-- Steven thought it fell a bit short. Jen felt her vocal was off and Randy did not think that was the right song for her to sing right now. This was a letdown because Hollie's first performance was so good.

Joshua Ledet sang This Is a Man's Man's Man's World by James Brown-- Steven said I've never heard anything like that in my life. Jen said it had passion and heart. Randy said it was one of the best performances on any singing show ever. You took us to church. Like the judges, I don't know what to say anymore, Joshua just evokes so much emotion when he sings, I feel every note.

Jessica Sanchez sang And I Am Telling You by Jennifer Holliday-- Steven said it was another winning performance. Jen predicted that this competition will be a race to the finish with everyone performing at such a high level. Randy said Phillip, Joshua, and Jessica are in it to win it. He called Jessica's performance another phenomenal vocal. As I said, I liked Jessica's performance here, but it was not as good as Jennifer Hudson's performance of this song.

American Idol Season 11: The Top 5 Travel Back to the 60's and Take On a British Invasion

Tonight Steven Van Zandt coaches the contestants with Jimmy Iovine. Round one had the contestants taking a time travel back to the 60s; these are tough classic songs but impressive when sung the right way.

Round two, the contestants sang songs by British Artists, with the recent influx of popular British musicians, the contestants would have a lot to choose from.

Round 1: The 60s

Hollie Cavanagh sang River Deep Mountain High by Tina and Ike Turner-- Steven said it's the first time he has seen her really step out. Randy said, like all the other judges, he liked it too, and that she wore the second verse out. Over these past two weeks, Hollie has really stepped out, and she has grown and gained confidence. She was in great voice tonight.

Phillip Phillips sang The Letter by The Box Tops-- Randy loved it because he made it his own. Jennifer said he is compelling to watch and a dynamic performer. Steven said there is good news and bad news; the bad news is that I couldn't find the melody. The good news is that you got away with it. I agree with the judges, Phillip is so confident in what he is doing on stage and who he is as a musician that an otherwise mediocre performance is seen as great. I also do appreciate his originality.

Skylar Laine sang Fortunate Son by Creedance Clearwater Revival-- Jennifer said she attacks every song and it is so natural for her. Steven said Skylar loves music and music loves her. Randy talked about how Skylar is ready to be up on a stage, and he asked her if it's what she loves most, and she said, "yes sir". In all honesty, I've been thinking about what is going to happen when this season is over, and I am thinking that just about everyone who was in the Top 7 is going to score a record deal. Skylar is just one of many whose album I cannot wait to go out and buy. She is such a firecracker.

Joshua Ledet and Phillip Phillips sang You Lost That Loving Feeling by The Righteous Brothers-- The boys nailed this performance, I loved all the passion in it and what each of them brought to it individually and as a duo. Amazing! Steven thought the duet was beautiful. Jen and Randy thought it really came alive as the performance went on.

Jessica Sanchez sang Proud Mary by Tina Turner-- Jen thought it had a lot of soul and she sounded like a combination of Tina Turner and Beyonce. Steven thought it sounded great and she brought the blues out of it. Randy thought it was just okay, and it didn't really sit well with him. I agree with Randy, I didn't see a lot that was special about this performance. For a singer as skilled as Jessica, this sounded a little bit karaoke.

Joshua Ledet sang Ain't Too Proud to Beg by The Temptations-- Steven thinks he is one of the top two idols of all time. I wonder who the other person is, just out of curiosity? Jen said he is like a throwback from another era. Randy said you could make a record like this right now and bring R&B back in a big way.

Round 2: British Invasion

Hollie Cavanagh sang Bleeding Love by Leona Lewis-- Steven loved this and thinks she has a beautiful ballad voice. Jen thought it was breathtaking at parts and felt that Hollie surprised even herself. I think Jessica needs to watch it because in my opinion Hollie has passed her tonight and she may be in trouble tomorrow night in terms of votes.

Phillip Phillips sang Time of the Season by The Zombies-- Randy thought it was a nice performance but he wasn't jumping up and down about it. Jen thought the verses suited Phillips' singing style, and the melody of the song was familiar enough that people were drawn in. Steven was pleased that he sang the melody. This may have been a little bit too mellow, could Phillip be in trouble? I think so.

Skylar Laine sang You Don't Have To Say You Love Me by Dusty Springfield--  Randy said she is peaking at the right time and getting better at telling a story with the songs she sings and she way she sings them. Jennifer told her that she can win this. I think Skylar is top three maybe even top two material.

Jessica Sanchez sang You Are So Beautiful by Joe Cocker-- Jen felt this was similar to her performance of I Will Always Love You in that she captivated the whole audience. Randy said your talent love is unbelievable, that was so good. I was touched by this performance, but will it be enough to save her from the disaster that was Proud Mary?

Joshua Ledet sang To Love Somebody by The Bee Gees-- The judges gave Joshua another standing ovation. Randy said what you did is what it's all about. You were born to do this. I have been doing this show for eleven seasons, and you're one of the best singers ever on this show. Jen said, forget this show, you're one of the best singers I've heard in the past 50 years. Steven said that he could record that song right now and make it a hit. Joshua deserves every compliment he receives, and I cannot wait to hear him sing his own songs.

American Idol Season 11: The Top 6 Rock Out to Queen and The Contestant's Choice

The rumor was that Ryan wouldn't host tonight because he was under the weather with a horrible stomach bug. Last week, in a surprising turn of events, the competition didn't end for Elise Testone or Hollie Cavanagh, both of whom  were considered to be the weakest performers. The competition did end for Colton Dixon, who many thought were favored by the teenage girl population. Incidentally he is said to be co writing songs already with Idol alum Chris Daughtry.

The Top 6 Sing Queen

Jessica Sanchez sang Bohemian Rhapsody-- Steven said Freddie would have been proud. Jennifer said the vocal was beautiful, but it needed to be more rocked out at the rock parts. Randy felt that the performance had a lot of control especially since there were no runs in the performance. It impressed me that Jessica was able to pull this off, because it is truly one of the most difficult songs to sing. Score: 4.75

Skylar Laine sang The Show Must Go On-- Steven thought it was fabulous and could not believe that that voice and that interpretation comes from an 18 year old. Jennifer said she got goosebumps from the intensity of the performance. Randy called it one of her best to date, incredible, and effortless. Skylar continues to blow me away. There are a lot of nay-sayers out there saying that they don't think another country singer will or should win this year. I hope Skylar Laine proves them wrong. She is top three material for me.

Joshua Ledet sang Crazy Little Thing Called Love-- The judges gave Joshua a standing ovation. Randy said unbelievable, you're so ready, I love you, you remind me of Sam Cooke, a young Wilson Pickett in the making. Jennifer said, with you, I always know I'm gonna get an inspired vocal with a great performance. Steven said, it's always a surprise, we never know what we're gonna get with you; Freddie would have loved that. Joshua is another person who is top three material for me, I don't think he has had one bad week yet, he is by far, one of the most consistent performers that has ever been on American Idol.

Elise Testone sang I Want it All-- Steven called it great. Jennifer felt the song and the style of the song was right in her element, rock, blues, sexy. Randy said it was so right for you, brilliant, one of your best performances to date. Elise has been one of the most inconsistent contestants this year, and I think part of the issue is that she didn't understand who she wanted to be as an artist, I think she is figuring that out more and more every day. I hope she finally does continue on this path because she's talented.

Phillip Phillips sang Fat Bottomed Girls-- Steven said great choice of song, Jennifer said she loves how Phillip shows different flavors of himself. Randy was the most critical saying, I liked it, but I didn't love it. I agree with all of them. I feel like every time I see Phillip perform, it's such a pleasure to watch someone who is a true original. At the same time, this performance was one that didn't really excite me.

Hollie Cavanagh sang Save Me-- Jennifer urged Hollie not to get caught up in thinking about the audience, she wants her to let go, have fun, and be touched by the parts of the song that touch you. Jessica Sanchez sang Dance with my Father by Luther Vandross-- Jen said it may have been the most beautiful that she has ever heard that song sung. Steven said I have never heard you sing badly. Randy called her a natural and said it is truly amazing to him. You know what's wrong when you get up there? Absolutely nothing. I was touched by Jessica's performance and it was beautiful because she connected to the song so sincerely.

Skylar Laine sang Tattoos on This Town by Jason Aldean-- Randy said Skylar is fierce and just goes up there and has the time of her life. Jen commented on how comfortable Skylar is on the stage. Steven didn't like the song much but said Skylar can do no wrong and that he is one of her biggest fans. I feel like literally this girl needs to record an album this year and release it in the fall. She is going to do so amazingly well, not just in country, but in pop.

Jen said, I don't know what to say to you anymore, that was transcendent, you snap us into reality, and you bring us present. Steven said I hope your record label finds you good songs and you're off to the moon. Skylar has apparently been counting, and Joshua has had twelve standing ovations including this one. This boy had me in tears, he touched me with this song. It was so sincere that I literally felt everything he was feeling.

Hollie Cavanagh sang Rolling in the Deep by Adele-- I agree with all the judges being positive about this performance from Hollie because it was much better than what she's done lately. However, Adele has been a bit overdone lately by singers on reality shows, and I wonder if that special thing about singing an Adele song has worn away. If only Hollie could approach every performance and every song the way that she sang this, she'd be all set.

Colton Dixon sang Bad Romance by Lady Gaga-- Randy compared his performance to being at a Colton Dixon concert. Both Randy and Jennifer agreed that he has consistently been in the zone. Steven loved his outfit, the band, and the arrangement. Colton said that singing "Bad Romance" was out of the box for him. I didn't love that song selection for him, but I cannot deny that it was still a strong performance.

Skylar is just all heart, and she knows fully who she is.

01 Skylar Laine sang Didn't You Know How Much I Loved You by Kellie Pickler-- Randy said you could have a hit with a song like that. I felt you for the first time in a long time, that was crazy hot and crazy good. Jen said it was pitch perfect, and Steven said he is enamored by the women on the show this year. Skylar just blew me away with this song, it seemed like it was written and meant for her.

Jen thought it was really beautiful and wants Jessica to take the viewers on a ride with her for the final weeks. Steven said, when I hear you sing, I forget where I am. I understand Steven's comment, Jessica is so good, so talented, and so full of emotion when she sings that I get lost in her performance, in each song, in each lyric. She is just a mesmerizing performer, and I believe when everyone says she is going to be something special.

04 Joshua Ledet sang Runaway Baby by Bruno Mars-- Joshua got the first standing ovation of the night. All the judges praised Joshua, Jen loves that dynamic that a Joshua performance brings. Randy said in more words that Joshua is the whole package. Joshua is so powerful when he performs and his confidence is so evident from the first note to the last, every move on the stage is so deliberate and I just absolutely love watching him every week.

05 Hollie Cavanagh sang Perfect by Pink-- Jennifer felt that she sang beautifully tonight and she should be proud of her performance. Randy said this was better than last week. Steven said something like she wasn't perfect, but it was good. I like Hollie, and this is a definite improvement over last week, but I also recognize her insecurity when she sings and it makes her a bit weak in comparison to the other contestants.

06 Phillip Phillips sang Give A Little More by Maroon 5-- Steven praised how Phillip has evolved. Jen and Randy found the performance underwhelming and said that it wasn't as good as the Phillip performances that they are used to. I understand all sides of this, Phillip has evolved and has displayed growth which is tough for someone as good as him. I also see Jennifer and Randy's point, the performance just seemed to kind of sit and not really go anywhere. I wish he has picked a more mainstream song.

01 Deandre Brackensick sang I Like It by The DeBarge-- Jen said you were super comfortable up there, you sounded amazing, and you made it your own. Steven said you took me to another place. Randy said El DeBarge is somewhere saying Deandre has arrived, one of your best performances to date. You should make a record like this right now, and be a contemporary version of El DeBarge. I have extremely fond memories of the 80s being a child of the 80s myself, and let me tell you that Deandre has the whole vibe that DeBarge brought and it was so exciting for me to see that. I am still a gigantic fan of this kid.

02 Elise Testone sang I Wanna Know What Love is by Foreigner-- Steven didn't think it was the right song for her. It seemed as though Jennifer didn't want to be negative so she said she could see her passion in the performance. Randy said that is one of the best songs ever and you never quite hit the pitch so it was off for the whole performance. It was out of tune everywhere for me. I agree with Randy, listening to it back, there was something off about it, like her voice didn't sit in the right place. This is really sad because Elise has proven in the best couple weeks that she really deserves to be here, hopefully this won't lead to her demise on the show.

03 Phillip Phillips sang That's All by Genesis-- Steven loved his individuality and who he is, he said it's what makes him great. Jen thought it started out tough cause the guitar was too loud, but he brought it at the end. Randy loved it and loved the song choice. Randy also gave props to Tony Kanal for telling him to stop playing at the bridge, he said it let the song breathe. Phillip knows exactly who he is and it gives him confidence and that's what makes every performance not just great, but special.

04 Joshua Ledet sang If You Don't Know Me By Now by Simply Red-- Jen said ask and you shall receive, that was a powerhouse performance, you held back at the beginning, but you gave it to us at the end. Steven it was over the top, outstanding, how can someone sing like you at your age? Randy said I wanted to stand up from beginning to end, you were so mature. I think Joshua's poise is beyond his 19 years, every week, I am moved and inspired by him.

05 Jessica Sanchez sang How Will I Know by Whitney Houston-- Jen said your vocals are so amazing, your vocals make everything go away for me. Steven said, your voice is so fantastic, everything you do is so beautiful. Randy worked with Whitney on that song and said it was so effortless and mature. It was no Whitney, but Jessica was able to put her own stamp on this and held her own with a song that was a major hit in the 80s.

Jen told her she was right in listening to what everyone around her says but when she gets up on stage she needs to forget all that, be in the moment, and perform. Randy agreed with Steven and Jen. It sounded like Hollie had an off night, it's almost like she's trying too hard to be technically perfect.

07 Colton Dixon sang Time After Time by Cyndi Lauper-- Jen really liked the performance. Randy praised how Colton, Joshua, and Phllip took the songs and made them their own. He also complimented on the arrangement, as did Steven. Both made shout outs to the drummer. Randy also talked about how current Colton is, and I agree. This is a sound that we're hearing on the radio right now, and I just love the natural rawness of Colton's voice.

As soon as I saw the song list for tonight, I went crazy because not only did I know it was going to be an awesome show, but the incomparable Stevie Nicks would be mentoring the contestants. What more could they ask for, and what more could we, the viewer, ask for?

01 Colton Dixon sang Everything by Lifehouse-- Steven said, you're a judges dream come true. You sing a song, make it bleed, you have perfect pitch, and star quality. Jennifer said you had so much emotion but you had composure and control, really amazing. Randy said you have believability, I believe every song you sing, every lyric. He even called him a contender for the finale. I have to ditto everything the judges said; there aren't enough good things I can say about Colton. He moved me with this performance.

I love Skyler's tenacity, her absolute fearlessness to take on whatever song with tons of conviction. I can totally see her recording a Miranda Lambert-like record.

03 Heejun Han sang A Song for You by Donny Hathaway-- Steven said Heejun turned it around, you're a natural, your voice is great. Jen said when you sing like that, you move people. Randy said it wasn't perfect, but the Heejun we selected came back to us tonight. This is how I remember Heejun during Hollywood week, his desire was there 100%, and he wanted to win this, for himself, for his family, for the kids he works with. Tonight, that guy came back, and as a Heejun fan, I am so proud.

04 Hollie Cavanagh sang Jesus Take the Wheel by Carrie Underwood-- Randy said she did a really good job, but there were some pitchy moments. He received boos from that comment but he then said overall "pretty good job, I was impressed." Jennifer disagreed with Randy and said she felt it was one of her best because of her emotion and how she completely connected with the song. Steven fell somewhere in between saying that he agrees that she had the emotion but that he would have picked a different song that would have more fully showcased her vocal ability. I agree with all the judges, Jen is right, Hollie had a definite connection with this song, and I think it's the first time I have seen that kind of connection and emotion from her, but there were some pitch issues in the performance.

05 Deandre Brackensick sang Sometimes I Cry by Eric Benet-- The judges gave him a standing ovation, I should also mention that they gave one to Heejun too. Steven called the performance 100% passion, and said he gave Prince a run for his money. Jen urged people to pick up the phone and vote for him because his performance was so beautiful and went straight to the heart. Randy said he has this great Maxwell- Prince thing and he said not only is Heejun back, but Deandre is back too. I thought there were some moments in that song that absolutely had me breathless. His voice is just undeniably special, I hope and pray people do pick up that phone and vote like Jennifer said.

I loved this version too, I could even see her singing this at her concert as a cover. Her voice is unreal and beautiful.

Jennifer said the music always comes first for Phillip and we can all see it every time he performs. He wants us to feel it too. Steven said the music is in your body and soul and I love it. Randy said I love the artist that you are, it's about being an individual. Phillip brings me into his performance every time he sings, I feel like I am right there with him. I've been thinking about this for the past few weeks, and everyone has compared Phillip to Dave Matthews, and honestly, no offense to Dave, but Dave Matthews who? I say that because Phillip is so his own artist that there should be no comparison. I haven't heard anyone like him.

Randy said I love you, I love your voice, that was flawless, emotional, brilliant, Mariah would be proud. Steven said, everyone has pushed beyond their own limits tonight, including you. Jennifer said you are a phenom, an angel from heaven, you're a God send Joshua. Joshua Ledet takes me somewhere special every time he sings. I feel like I go somewhere outside of myself, my emotions fully come to the surface, and this performance, this artist, totally had me from the first note.

09 Elise Testone sang Whole Lotta Love by Led Zepplin-- Stevie loved Elise and felt she was a kindred spirit and if she needed a singer she would hire her in a second. Steven said Robert Plant would be proud, you pulled it off. Jen said, I didn't want to get up, but you made me get up. Randy said everyone wants to win it tonight, you did an amazing job, congrats. Elise is such a throwback, someone who sings and performs like she is from another time, but I am happy she is from this time. This performance had sass, I loved it.

American Idol Season 11: The Top 10 Are in a Billy Joel "State of Mind"

Ryan announced that it was Billy Joel night on American Idol and that Diddy would be mentoring the Idols with Tommy Hilfiger giving them style advice.

01 Deandre Brackensick sang Only the Good Die Young-- Steven didn't really make any comments, Jen liked his vibe and though he did a good job. Randy didn't think it was great, but he thought it was okay. I agree with Jennifer Lopez, Deandre mixed his style with Billy Joel's style and I thought it was a sound balance.

02 Erika Van Pelt sang New York State of Mind-- Randy called her one of the best singers this season. He said those who "can do", should. Steven said that she did a beautiful job. Jen also praised not only her singing, but her style. I think Erika had a new found confidence and it was great to see. She is a strong singer, and completely underestimated so far by the American public. I am hoping this new look will be exactly what she needs to earn more votes, sad as that sounds.

Steven said you took a song I didn't know, and you breathed life into it. Randy said both the other judges are right, always grab the lyrics and make them your own. Steven added at the end, can you tell how much we love you Joshua? I actually really liked this because it was almost like a gospel version of She's Got a Way which was pleasant to the ears. Joshua really seemed to be comfortable singing the song in his own style. I understands Jen's point of view for future performances, but the point is a bit moot here because he sounded so good that I cannot imagine him not moving on to next week.

Steven and Randy both agreed it was a little bit pitchy at the beginning because it was so low. Steven said when she hits the chorus of a song, she sings it with such conviction. Skylar is a fighter, her effort is so evident every week, and I don't think Billy Joel was her jam, but she made the best of it.

06 Phillip Phillips sang Movin' Out-- Jennifer said you are who you are, awesome performance. Steven said you "Phillip Phillipsed" that performance. Randy said, they told you to take away your guitar, you kept it. They told you not to wear gray, you wore gray. Randy said, keep doing what you're doing, because you actually know who you are. He added that's the best rendition of that song that I've ever heard. I have never heard that song, but to me, it's a Phillip Phillips original. I loved the way he sang the song, and his performance quality, he puts all the superficial aside because he wants the audience to be entertained with his music. To me, that's what a star really is.

07 Hollie Cavanagh sang Honesty-- Steven felt it was a little bit pitchy, like she over sang and over thought it a little bit, but despite that, he still felt she was good. Jen and Randy both made similar comments to Steven reminding her to hit her notes more head on and tune her vocals. I like Hollie a lot, and while this wasn't my favorite Hollie performance she did turn it into a power ballad which did suit her. I agree that maybe she over thought the performance which is why it didn't compare to last week.

08 Heejun Han sang My Life-- Jennifer and Randy both said something similar, the basis of it was, his vocals weren't the best cause he was running all over the stage, but they enjoyed it because it was entertaining and he had fun. Steven echoed the sentiment, but added that he will need to get more serious if he hopes to do better in the competition. I felt Heejun was hurt by the criticism he faced last week, and I think that reflected in his performance this week, he was less serious. I hope people still pick up the phone and vote for him because during Hollywood week I felt something really special in Heejun.

09 Jessica Sanchez sang Everybody Has a Dream-- Another standing ovation tonight! Steven said when God was giving out vocal cords, you were at the front of the line; thank you for letting me hear you sing baby! Jen felt the song was made for her. Randy commented on her consistency and said she has a moment every week she steps on the stage, flawless and perfection. My question is, what can Jessica not do, what can she not sing? She is so amazing and so humble about her unique gift.

10 Colton Dixon sang Piano Man-- Jennifer told Colton he sings with pure feeling and Diddy paid him one of the biggest compliments by telling him he would buy that record right now. Steven said your choice of chords to sing was stunning. Randy told him to stay an individual because that's what he loves about him. Colton's performance touched my heart, and I feel that he connected with the song which always comes across to the listener. This was one of my favorite performances of the night.

American Idol Season 11: The Top 12 or is it 11?

Ryan Seacrest kicked off the show by announcing that there would be yet another controversy resulting in a disqualified contestant.

Tonight's mentor was Idol fave Will.i.am.

01 Phillip Phillips sang Hard to Handle by The Black Crowes (1990)-- Randy complimented Phillip's song choice saying it was a good one for him, very bluesy. Jennifer said it was very natural for him, it's like music is in every cell of his body. Steven said I like how you pick songs that match your voice and your character. I personally loved the song choice, and really loved Phillip's performance, just the way he moved on stage and everything about it.

02 Jessica Sanchez sang Turn the Beat Around by Gloria Estefan (1995)-- Steven loves her voice but warned her not to stray too much from ballads which really fit her voice. Jennifer said, good job but it was not my favorite thing for you. Randy said pick something "more" because you are that good. To me, it wasn't as bad as the judges made it out to be. I think the song was too simple considering the voice Jessica has, also her voice is more legato and that didn't work with such a syncopated song. She's a front runner though who isn't in danger of going home (but everyone vote!).

03 Heejun Han sang Right Here Waiting by Richard Marx (1989)-- Randy thought it was pitchy all over the place. Jennifer said I could tell you were struggling but you were fighting through it and I felt your heart, by the end, it was really beautiful. Steven said you were out of breath, but I still love your voice no matter what; you have a special voice. Heejun does indeed have heart, he makes an effort every time he steps on the stage. He made not have been in his best voice tonight, but his voice is forever special and in the grand scheme that means more.

04 Elise Testone sang Let's Stay Together by Al Green (1983)-- Steven loves Elise's voice as does Jen; Randy proclaimed, Elise is back. He commented particularly on the run at the end and said beautiful, it was butter. I felt the intro to the song was rough, I didn't like how she scooped into some of her notes, but as the song went along it got more and more beautiful, and I understand now why the judges saved Elise last week.

05 Deandre Brackensick sang Endless Love by Luther Vandross and Mariah Carey (1994)-- None of the judges liked the song choice and they said Jimmy was wrong for steering him to that song. Jennifer said despite that, you sang it so well. I may be a little prejudiced but I have loved Deandre since last year, and his voice is unique because he can sing really low notes and yet he also has that beautiful falsetto.

06 Shannon Magrane sang One Sweet Day by Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men (1995)-- Jen was impressed and thought she did a beautiful job; Steven echoed her sentiment. Randy said he loved the runs she did throughout the song and loves her fearlessness at her young age. I didn't love this as much as the judges did, only because this is one of my favorite songs of all time, and her voice faltered in some spots where she shouldn't have. I do think the last third of the song was amazing, and I did like how it ended.

07 Colton Dixon sang Broken Heart by White Lion (1991)-- Jen liked the song and said Colton looks pretty when he sings. Steven disagreed and didn't like the song choice, and felt the song didn't go anywhere. Randy said the song choice didn't matter because Colton is in the zone and consistent every week. I'm torn on this because I feel that because I didn't know the song, I wasn't as engaged. I do like Colton, and I appreciate his musical style and his talent, I just wish the song had been different. That being said, he was in good voice tonight.

08 Erika Van Pelt sang Heaven by Bryan Adams (1985)-- Steven loves the song, felt it was too busy, but still likes her voice. Jen said the arrangement left us wanting more, but she liked it, and so did Randy. Randy said he gave it an eight out of ten, but didn't like what Jimmy did with the song. I think this was the perfect song for her voice but I have to say I agree with the judges, the arrangement was a bit much. She said have sang it more straight and just let her voice speak for itself.

Jermaine was confronted by Nigel and Ken and came clean about exactly what took place. They said they would have to let him go from the show and that they were sorry because they said hearing him in rehearsal that day was the best that they had ever heard him. After listening to him singing Somewhere Out There it made me sad, because he is talented. I hope people don't look at him and think he lied or he screwed the show. Maybe, just maybe, he knew what he did was wrong, and he couldn't reveal it because then he never would have had the Idol experience. Having that experience may have been what he needed to turn his life around and get things moving in the right direction.

09 Skylar Laine sang Love Sneakin' Up on You by Bonnie Raitt (1994)-- Steven praised her voice and said she hasn't sang badly yet. Jen said, I know you think we're being mean, but if we're not honest, we're doing you a disservice. She then went on to say, "you killed it". Randy said the song choice doesn't matter if you sing it well, and called her their resident country rocker. Skylar is my favorite lady of the night so far, she has so much spunk, it's crazy.

10 Joshua Ledet sang When a Man Loves a Woman by Michael Bolton (1992)-- Steven said Joshua, that was so good, God came through your eyes, it was so beautiful. Randy said phenomenal, incredible on every level, crazy good! Jen said, best thing I have ever seen on American Idol ever. Wow! For me, this was a throwback to Motown and the likes of Sam Cooke, Marvin Gaye, David Ruffin, Eddie Kendricks. It was like hearing this song for the first time, and Joshua was slow, took his time, and got it right. Every single note was amazing, and I treasured it, I want to hear this performance again and again.
Score: 5+ (I want to give it more than just a 5)

11 Hollie Cavanagh sang The Power of Love by Celine Dion (1993)-- Jen said, you and Joshua, they saved the best for last, that was beautiful. Steven said, there was a couple of pitchy things, and I don't know where you get your voice, but it's from heaven above. Randy said you blew it out the box, very well done. Hollie is a little powerhouse and this song was a great choice for her. I didn't like how they arranged the song, specifically the words they changed around and took out of the song in order to abbreviate it for the time she was allotted. Unlike last week though, her voice was entirely on point.

American Idol Season 11 The Semifinals: The Top 13 Guys

Fair note to my readers: I've been ill with a stomach virus for the past several days, but I am almost certain that I haven't been hallucinating. All critiques are spot on as they've always been.

From what I saw during auditions and the Hollywood rounds I expected more from this group of guys. The guys fell into one of two categories, they were either so good that they will move right into the next round, or they were so off that they have a 50/50 shot of getting there based on the fact that so many were so mediocre. It hasn't happened in a while, but this may be the year of the lady.

As usual, I will give each contestant a score from one to five, one being the worst, three being 50/50, and five being the best.

01 Reed Grimm sang Moves Like Jagger by Maroon 5-- Reed does have talent but his vocals were mediocre. He did a jazzed up version of this song which sounded similar to elevator music. He is musical, but this wasn't the right song for him to do. Score: 3

02 Adam Brock sang Think by Aretha Franklin-- His voice is solid, but many before him have sang this song, and this version didn't blow me away. There were many times during Hollywood week where he moved me more than this. Score: 3

03 Deandre Brackensick sang Reasons by Earth, Wind, and Fire-- His voice may be a little quiet or weak in parts, but it is definitely on pitch. He actually hits a couple of really amazing notes. Jennifer calls his voice perfect. Randy says he's pulling for him. Overall, I liked this performance. Score: 4

04 Colton Dixon sang Decode by Paramore-- Hmmm, this was a little bit of a confusing performance for me. I think Colton is better than what this performance was. Randy acted like we've never had a rocker or alternative rocker perform on American Idol before and we've had several of them over the years: David Cook, James Durbin, Adam Lambert, Bo Bice, Chris Daughtry, Allison Iraheta, just to name a few. To me, he is a relevant artist as Jennifer said, but this was not a great performance. Score: 3

05 Jeremy Rosado sang Gravity by Sara Bareilles-- Steven said he couldn't have picked a better song; I agree. Jennifer said, when you open your mouth, you affect people, and I forget that I'm a judge. The best of the night so far. He should be around going forward. Score 4.25

06 Aaron Marcellus sang Never Can Say Goodbye by The Jackson 5-- Randy said beautiful vocals. Jennifer said, I've always believed in you. Steven called him the whole package. I don't think it was great because I have heard others sing it better, but it was a good performance. Score: 4

07 Chase Likens sang Storm Warning by Hunter Hays-- Chase looks the part and seems like a nice country guy, but the vocals weren't all that special. Jen says he sounded great and has grown a lot in this competition. Maybe he has more talent, but we didn't see it with this performance, it was much too safe. Score: 3

08 Creighton Fraker sang True Colors by Cyndi Lauper-- Jennifer says she doesn't want him to go home, and I don't think he will be. That was one of the stronger performances of the night vocally. I don't think it's the best I have heard him. Steven enjoyed his phrasing throughout the song, and I would agree with that. He puts a unique spin on everything he does. Score: 4

09 Phillip Phillips sang In the Air Tonight by Phil Collins-- Jennifer said, you are one of the most special talents we found this year. Randy said you remind me so much of Dave Matthews. His only criticism was that maybe the melody of the song was changed a little bit too much. Clearly though, Phillip should sail right through, he's a legitimate contender. Score: 4.5

10 Eben Franckewitz sang Set Fire to The Rain by Adele-- I don't think this performance was quite as disastrous as everyone made it out to be. Eben is only 15 years old, and for 15, he was pretty calm, cool, and collected. I give him that 50/50 shot of making it into the top group just like I gave to many of the other guys.

11 Heejun Han sang Angels by Robbie Williams-- Oh dear, this young man is entertaining, but this just did not work. The phrasing was not good at all, the vocals were off tonight, he was brilliant so many times before, but this was bad. Score: 3

12 Joshua Ledet sang You Pulled Me Through by Jennifer Hudson-- Randy loved it. Jennifer says your voice is so talented, your voice is from God. Steven said I love you voice. I agree on all accounts, this was on a different level than everyone else, best performance of the night. I would be both surprised and upset if he didn't make it through to the next round. Score: 5

13 Jermaine Jones sang Dance With My Father Again by Luther Vandross-- Considering that Jermaine has that genuine baritone voice that is often very difficult to manage, he did really well. He made a great song selection that made his voice shine. It was so good that it may even land him in the group of finalists. Score: 4
