American Idol Season 23: The Top 8 Become 7 and Sing Judge's Picks

This is one of my least favorite shows every year. The judges each pick a song for the contestants and then the contestants pick which one they want to sing from the three choices. I don't think that in every case tonight the songs did the contestants justice.

Breanna Nix sang Independence Day by Martina McBride chosen by Luke-- I think this was a good performance that could have been great. If Breanna doesn't continue to step up on her performances she could find herself at the bottom.

Mattie Pruitt sang Always Been You by Jesse Murph chosen by Luke-- This was the weakest song choice. It did not highlight Mattie in any way for me.

John Foster sang I Cross My Heart by George Strait chosen by Carrie-- Could have been a bad performance because the song was a little boring for the Idol viewer but John is so technically skilled as a singer that he made this happen.

Josh King sang Home by Michael Buble chosen by Lionel-- Kiss of death performance.

Gabby Samone sang Hero by Mariah Carey chosen by Lionel-- Hero was a bit of a letdown, Gabby has been on such a high and this paled in comparison to her other performances.

Jamal Roberts sang I Believe by Fantasia chosen by Lionel-- This was the most expected in a good way performance. Jamal always delivers.

Thunderstorm Artis sang Faithfully by Journey chosen by Carrie-- This was the performance of the night for me.

Slater Nalley sang Atlantic City by Bruce Springsteen chosen by Luke-- This was the most unexpected choice in a good way performance. Slater keeps everyone guessing with his song choices but delivers.

At the end of the night, it came down to Mattie and Josh. Neither one of them had a song that was complimentary. Going on complete body of work, I would have chosen Josh. I know the judges really like Mattie though and so Josh was sent "home", fitting and interesting since that was the song chosen for him.
